Aeons FFX

Aeons in Final Fantasy X are this game’s version of summons. The majority of them are obtained as you progress through the story, three additional Aeons can be obtained later in some optional areas as well.

Each Aeon is also linked to a Celestial Weapon, once a weapon is found and its crest is used to upgrade it, the corresponding Aeon will be able to break the damage limit of 9,999.

Story Aeons:

Valefor

Valefor is the first Aeon that Yuna will unlock after visiting the Besaid Temple. When summoned, Valefor has access to a regular attack as well as a special attack called Sonic Wings. Sonic Wings has a chance of delaying the enemy’s next attack, as long as they are not immune to the effect.

Valefor’s Overdrive is called Energy Ray, you can upgrade it to Energy Blast which is far stronger by heading back to the Besaid Village and speaking to the girl with a dog. You’ll need to speak to both the girl and the dog in order to obtain it. If you don’t obtain this at the start of the game, then returning later becomes much more difficult as the area becomes blocked off by Dark Valefor, one of the Dark Aeons, and an extremely powerful late-game boss. So make sure to grab this before you leave Besaid the first time.

Valefor unlocks its break damage limit, allowing it to pass 9,999 damage after you obtain the Nirvana Celestial Weapon for Yuna and upgrade it using the Moon Crest.

Ifrit

The second Aeon in FFX is Ifrit, who is obtained from the Kilika Temple after completing the Cloister of Trials there. Ifrit starts with access to regular attacks and the ability: Meteor Strike.

Ifrit’s Overdrive is an ability called Hellfire. It will deal a large amount of fire damage to all enemies. Make sure that the enemies you’re in a battle with are not immune or capable of absorbing the fire element.

Ifrit requires Wakka’s World Champion Celestial Weapon to be upgraded with the Jupiter Crest before he can access the Break Damage Limit ability.

Ixion

Ixion is obtained from the Djose Temple after completing the Cloister of Trials. Ixion comes with access to regular attacks, and the ability: Aerospark. Aerospark removes positive buffs from enemies, making this a very useful ability early on.

Just like Ifrit, Ixion’s Overdrive is also elemental. Ixion’s Overdrive is the thunder-elemental attack Thor’s Hammer. Similarly to Ifrit, make sure the enemies you’re facing are not immune or capable of absorbing thunder damage.

Ixion can break the damage limit after you’ve obtained the Spirit Lance and upgraded it with the Saturn Crest.

Shiva

Shiva is obtained as part of the story progression from the Macalania Cloister of Trials. Shiva begins with basic attacks as well as access to Blizzard Magic. Casting Blizzard Magic on herself will act as a heal, as she absorbs the element.

Shiva’s Overdrive is the ice-elemental attack Heavenly Strike. It has the ability to inflict the “Threaten” status effect which can immobilize the enemies causing them to lose turns. Be careful not to use it on enemies that either resist or absorb Ice-elemental magic though.

Shiva can break the damage limit after you obtain the Onion Knight and upgrade it with the Venus Crest for Lulu.

Bahamut

Bahamut is the fifth and last of the Aeons obtained during the storyline. Bahamut is obtained by completing the Bevelle Cloister of Trials. Bahamut can use both regular attacks and a special attack called Impulse when he is first obtained. Impulse allows him to hit all enemies, however, it is significantly slower than his regular attacks. This makes it really effective to use against groups of enemies to reduce their numbers, before switching back to his regular attacks.

Bahamut’s Overdrive is Megaflare, a huge non-elemental attack against all enemies. This is a very impressive attack at this point in the game and is worth keeping ready to use as a Boss nuke whenever you think a boss might be approaching.

Bahamut is also able to break the damage limit of 9,999 as soon as you obtain him. For a while, this makes him a significantly better option to use as your go-to Aeon in battle.

Optional Aeons:

Once the story Aeons have all been acquired, you’ll eventually reach a point in the story where travel opens up more significantly and you can go wherever you want. At this point, you can go and track down three additional optional Aeons.

Yojimbo

Yojimbo is the first of the optional Aeons you can acquire. He is located in the Cavern of Stolen Fayth which is just off of the Calm Lands. While it’s technically possible to acquire him when you first reach the Calm Lands. It’s much easier to return later in the game when you’re stronger.

Yojimbo is unique as an Aeon. You’ll need to pay him Gil each time he is summoned to perform one of his attacks. The attack he performs is dependent on how much you pay him, as well as his bond with you. You can raise his bond with you by not letting him die, never paying him 0 Gil, and not immediately dismissing him after summoning. His attack choices are:

Daigoro – His weakest attack, Yojimbo will summon his dog to perform an attack for him.

Kozuka – Yojimbo tosses throwing stars at the enemy.

Wakizashi – Yojimbo uses his sword to slash at enemies, this can hit all enemies.

Zanmato – Ends the battle instantly by slicing all enemies in half. (Works on some boss battles, most importantly it works on the Dark Aeons.)

Yojimbo is linked to Auron’s celestial weapon the Masamune, once it’s upgraded with the Mars Crest, he’ll also be able to break the damage limit with his attacks.

Anima

Anima is the second optional Aeon that can be obtained in the game. You obtain her by completing the Destruction Sphere for each of the main Temples. Each of these Destruction Spheres when used correctly will reveal a treasure chest. Open all six of the treasure chests to be able to complete Baaj Temple and obtain the Aeon, Anima.

Anima begins with the ability to use basic attacks and a special attack called Pain. Pain has a chance of instantly defeating enemies.

Anima’s Overdrive is called Oblivion and is one of the most powerful moves in the game. Anima is capable of breaking the damage limit as soon as you obtain her, her Overdrive also causes multiple hits against all enemies, making it extremely valuable in tough battles. Of all the Aeons, only the Magus Sisters can rival Anima’s raw power, however, they are a bit more finicky to get the maximum damage out of.

The Magus Sisters

The last of the optional Aeons that you can obtain is the Magus Sisters. You’ll need to have obtained all the other Aeons in the game before you can try to obtain the Magus Sisters. To obtain them you’ll need to complete Remiem Temple and have also completed the Belgemine Side Quest, which awards you the Celestial Mirror.

The Magus Sisters Aeon is comprised of three sisters. Instead of being able to control them as normal, Yuna will instead only have access to general commands such as “Help each other!”, “Go, Go, Go!” and “Fight!”. The sisters will then choose the most appropriate actions based on your commands.

Cindy is the large sister that looks like a Ladybug. She’s responsible for the group’s healing and protective magics.

Mindy is the smallest sister who looks like a wasp, she’s responsible for casting high-level magic for the group.

Sandy is the third and tallest of the three sisters, she looks like a Praying Mantis. She’ll mostly be in charge of physical attacks for the group, and usually inflicts the most damage.

In order to use the Magus Sister’s Overdrive, which is called Delta Attack, all three sisters will need their Overdrive meters full. Each of the sisters also has access to a special attack; Cindy can use an ability called Camisade, Mindy can cast Passado, and Sandy has access to an ability called Razzia.
