The Forest Temple – The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Epona and Lon Lon Ranch – Zelda Ocarina of Time

Table of Contents

Epona and Lon Lon Ranch

Make your way out of the Temple of Time and through the now ruined Hyrule Market out into Hyrule Field. If you stop by the Gatehouse on the way out of Hyrule Market you’ll find a new owner has taken it over and turned it into a Ghost Shop. We’ll be covering this quest later, as we need Epona and the Fairy Bow to complete it.

From the Castle Town head straight for Lon Lon Ranch.

Lon Lon Ranch

When you enter, you can take a look around to learn that Talon was kicked out of the Ranch and it was taken over by Ingo, who now works with Gannondorf.

Head straight for the Corral area in the center of the Ranch to find Ingo. Speak to him and pay 10 Rupees to ride a horse.

Once you’re inside the Corral, play Epona’s Song and Epona will approach you. Jump on and ride her around the Corral, jumping over both sets of fences that have been set up as obstacles. Ride back to Ingo and speak to him while you’re still on Epona to challenge him to a race.

The Horse Race

Ingo will cheat and begin a little before the race officially starts, but you should be able to catch up and overtake him without much trouble. Try to stick close to the inner side of the track so that you travel the shortest distance. Also, make sure to only ever use about half of your carrots at a time. Save going all out with the speed boost from the carrots until the very last portion of the final part of the race.

Once you’re victorious he’ll offer you a second race, this time offering to let you keep Epona if you win the race. Accept the race and get ready to go again.

Use the same tactics as the first race, try to pull ahead of him on the corners by staying close to the inside of the track and don’t spend all your carrots until the very last portion of the race.

Once you win, Ingo will lock you in the ranch and declare that you can’t leave with Epona. Luckily Epona can jump, make a run at either the wall on the side of the ranch or at the gate that Ingo closed on you, to have Epona jump straight over it and leave Lon Lon Ranch.

Hyrule Field

You’ll witness a short cutscene of Epona rearing up, happily accepting her freedom, before regaining control of Link and now Epona as well. From here on out you can summon Epona to you in Hyrule Field by playing Epona’s Song on your Ocarina.

Lon Lon Ranch – Timed Race

You can now reenter Lon Lon Ranch if you want as well to find that things have improved and Malon is now in charge of the things. It seems that Epona was promised to Gannondorf and he was not happy with Ingo for losing the horse.

Malon will recognize you now if you speak to her, you can also accept her challenge for a timed horse race if you want. I completed it in the video above, but it was very very difficult (literally edited out about 30 failed attempts). The reward is a Cow that will be delivered to Link’s Kokiri Forest House, it does nothing except give you milk if you play Epona’s Song to it. I do not recommend completing the race unless you absolutely feel the need to. Good luck.

Once you’re done with the races, head back out into Hyrule Field to continue on.

Hyrule Field

Head straight for Kakariko Village on the map, you can get there much faster, now that you have access to Epona.

Head straight through Kakariko Village for now and enter the Graveyard out the back.

The Hookshot – Zelda Ocarina of Time

The Hookshot

Head straight to Kakariko Village and make your way out the back to the Graveyard.

Heart Piece #19 – Kakariko Village Magic Bean Plant

If you planted a Magic Bean in here when you were a child, you’ll now find a Magic Bean Plant has grown out of the Soft Soil location in the Graveyard. Hop on and it will float up and allow you to jump and reach the platform above it. Roll into and smash the box here to reveal our next Heart Piece.

The Grave next to the Soft Soil location in the Graveyard (which has flowers in front of it) can be pulled back. Pull back the grave and jump into the hole that it reveals.

Dampe’s Race

Down in the hole, you’ll find the ghost of the old Kakariko Village Gravekeeper, Dampe. He’ll challenge you to a race, in this race you need to keep up and follow his path through this underground area. He will occasionally throw out flames to stun and damage you, slowing you down in the hopes to make you fall behind and get lost.

The path he follows is the same each time so you’ll get to know it pretty quickly. Head forward first and just follow the left wall. After the first doorway, stay close to the righthand side wall until you reach a large open room. Here head through the right exit, then take a left, and finally a right at the Purple flames. Follow the right-hand side until you reach the ledges. Here you can climb either the left one or the one directly ahead of you and just follow the path to the end from here.

As long as you don’t drop too far behind he’ll congratulate you on keeping up before disappearing and leaving a chest behind for you, containing the Hookshot.

The Hookshot will work by allowing Link to grapple to targets or by grabbing and pulling items to him, it has a limited range though, so some items or locations will remain outside of your range for a while.

Through the doorway behind the chest, you’ll find a large blue block, blocking the path. Play the Song of Time to get rid of it and climb up the ledges and you’ll pop out into the Kakariko Village Windmill.

Heart Piece #20 – Kakariko Windmill

After getting the Dampe’s Race you’ll follow the path to reach the upper level of the Kakariko Village Windmill. Here you can wait for the spinning gears in the center to reach you so that you can jump onto the gear and ride it over to where another Heart Piece is waiting for you to jump over to. If you miss it, you’ll need to go back through the passage Dampe leads you through to reach it again.

The Song of Storms

Jump down to the lower level of the Windmill and speak to the man here playing the instrument, he’ll teach you the Song of Storms.

Now that we’ve grabbed the Heart Piece and the new Ocarina Song, head back out of the Windmill and into Kakariko Village again. We have a few loose Heart Pieces and Gold Skulltula’s we can gather now that we have the Hookshot, so we’ll grab those before continuing on to the Forest Temple

Kakariko Village

Heart Piece #21 – Dampe Race

Our next Heart Piece is actually a prize for racing Dampe a second time. Head back down his grave and challenge him to another race. This time he will be MUCH harder, you need to win the race in under a minute. It took me numerous times and a fair amount of luck to actually win this, so be warned it’s not going to be easy. You’ll be able to claim another Heart Piece for your trouble though.

Heart Piece #22 – Kakariko Rooftop

The next Heart Piece we can claim is in Kakariko Village. The exit from the windmill has a small fence near it. Climb on top of the fence and position yourself so that you can use the Hookshot to grapple over to the roof of the building across from you. You can only grapple onto the actual roof tiles, so make sure to be careful with your aiming to grab the roof tiles and not the wall or edge of the house. On top of the house, you’ll find a man, speak to him and he’ll hand over a Heart Piece for your trouble.

Gold Skulltula #45 – Kakariko Nighttime Rooftop

Head into the southwest corner of Kakariko Village, here you can Hookshot your way onto the roof of the Skulltula House and then turn around to face the south and use your Hookshot to reach the roof of the southmost house. Up here you can find the Gold Skulltula against the back wall, during the nighttime.

Hyrule Castle

Now that we’ve tidied up the last few bits in Kakariko Village, we need to head back to Hyrule Castle Town. From the town, make your way north towards where Hyrule Castle used to be.

As you enter the area you’ll find the Castle gone and Gannon’s Castle has taken its place.

Gold Skulltula #46 – Gannon’s Castle Arch

Once you’re in the area where Hyrule Castle used to be, follow the path to the right until you pass under a stone arch. Stop and turn around once you pass under and you’ll find a Golden Skulltula on the back of the arch.

Hyrule Field

Make your way back out of the Castle area and out into Hyrule Field. From here we need to start heading toward the Forest Temple, so the first stop is Kokiri Forest and the Lost Woods. Head there now.

Kokiri Forest

When you enter the forest you’ll notice it’s deteriorated as well. Now monsters have overtaken the outside of the forest, and all the residents spend their time hiding in their houses.

While we’re here we can grab another Gold Skulltula.

Gold Skulltula #47 – Kokiri Forest Nighttime Twins House

Head into the southeast part of the map, to the house with the “U” shaped branches out of the top. Play the Sun’s Song if it isn’t already nighttime and you can find a Gold Skulltula between the “U” shape. Use your Hookshot to defeat it, and then use the Hookshot again to claim the Gold Token.

From here head for the Lost Woods.

Lost Woods

To make it back to the Sacred Meado where we previously met with Saria, the path is: Right, Left, Right, Left, Straight, Left, Right. Along the way though you’ll encounter one of the Kokiri, Mido, blocking the path. Play Saria’s Song for him and he’ll get out of the way and allow you to proceed. Make your way into the Sacred Forest Meadow.

Sacred Forest Meadow

We need to make our way up to where we initially met with Saria, the last time we were here. This time around, the Deku Scrubs have been replaced with Moblins. Large bear-like armored enemies, they will charge if you cross their paths.

Wait for them to pass you and sneak behind them to continue forward. You can also use your Hookshot to defeat them as they walk past if you prefer that.

Continue to make your way north once you’re through the maze and you’ll encounter a larger Moblin with a club. Dodge the shockwaves from his blows until you’re close enough to defeat him with your sword.

Head up the stairs behind him to find Shiek where Saria used to sit. She’ll teach us the Minuet of Forest, this song will allow you to return here by simply playing it.

Once Shiek disappears we can enter the Temple, first, we should grab another Gold Skulltula though.

Gold Skulltula #48 – Sacred Forest Meadow Nighttime Hookshot

Make sure it’s nighttime first, play the Sun’s Song if you need, then head south from the area where we spoke to Shiek. You should notice a ladder leading on top of the maze, climb up and look toward the northeast wall to find the Gold Skulltula. Use your Hookshot to defeat the Gold Skulltula and then use it again to collect the Token.

Once you’ve got the Gold Skulltula Token, head back up to the Forest Temple entrance. Use your Hookshot on the branch above the steps leading into the Temple to have Link land on the steps and gain entrance to the Temple.

Forest Temple – Zelda Ocarina of Time

Forest Temple

Forest Temple Entrance – Small Key #1

As you enter you’ll trigger two Wolfos to spawn in and attack you. They’ll go down much easier now that you can hit them with the Master Sword. If you bait an attack out of them, they will leave themselves open for a counterattack afterward.

Gold Skulltula #49 – Forest Temple Entrance

Defeat them both and then use your Hookshot to defeat the Gold Skulltula on the eastern wall before climbing the vines to collect the Token. Continue up the vines to the upper level, you can use your Hookshot on the wooden chest up here to be pulled across to it. Open it for our first small key.

Hop down and head through the door into the next room.

Entry Hall

Use your Hookshot to defeat the Large Skulltula. The Hookshot will pierce their armor from the front, so you won’t need to wait for them to turn around anymore. Take the next door and continue on.

Main Hall

Once you enter you’ll trigger a small cutscene where four Poe Sisters will steal a flame each and disappear off into each of the four corners of the Temple.

Gold Skulltula #50 – Forest Temple Main Hall

Head straight across to the north exit of the room, stop at the door though and turn to face the east (right), here you’ll find the next Gold Skulltula on the wall. Use your Hookshot to destroy it and then use it again to grab the Token.

Once you’ve grabbed the Token, head through the door you’re standing in front of.

Blue Flame Skull Entry Hallway

For now, when it flies at you, block it with your Shield. That will extinguish the flames and allow you to defeat the skull with your sword.

Take the door to the north into the next room.

Stalfos Room – North Hallway Small Key #2

As soon as you enter the door will lock behind you and you’ll be thrown into battle with two Stalfos enemies. Keep your shield up and try to bait out an attack from them, after the attack, you’ll have a small opening to hit them back. Work on defeating them one at a time.

After both Stalfos are defeated, a chest will spawn in the middle of the room containing the next small key. Grab it and use a bottle to catch the fairy you’ll find in the jars around the outside edge of the room. You’ll want at least one fairy on you for the Boss fight at the end of the Temple.

Head back through the Hallway and out into the Main Hall again.

Main Hall

This time make your way to the northwest exit (right one exit over from where you reentered the room from). Here you’ll find your path blocked by another large blue block. Play the Song of Time to make it disappear, and head through the doorway it reveals.

Northwest Outdoor Ruins

Defeat the Giant Deku Baba in front of you and then head to the right. You’ll find a wall with a climbable vine here. There are three Skullwalltula spiders on the vine, you can defeat the lower two with your Hookshot, but the higher of the three is out of reach. Take out the lower two and then climb up, but stick to the righthand side of the vine as much as possible, this should make it so the third spider won’t hit you.

At the top enter the door and continue on.

Map Room

Defeat the Blue Flaming Skull here to make a chest appear in the middle of the room. Open the chest to claim the Dungeon Map.

Take the door at the other end of the room to continue on.

Northeast Outdoor Ruins

This Map passage connects the two outdoor areas. Once you pass through the doorway you’ll arrive on a ledge with a smaller Deku Baba. Defeat the plant, and use your Hookshot to grapple across to the opening toward the north. You’ll find a target above the opening that will allow you to use your Hookshot on it. Step on the switch found in this little alcove and you’ll trigger a short cutscene with water draining out of a nearby well.

Gold Skulltula #51 – Forest Temple Northeast Outdoor Ruins

Jump down from the alcove and toward the northeast. From here if you position yourself correctly, you can use your Hookshot to grapple across the water, by hitting the front of the small wooden chest with it. Once you’re on this slightly raised portion of the level, you’ll find a Golden Skulltula just around the corner, defeat it and grab the Token with your Hookshot and then open the chest.

Hop down from the raised portion and head south towards the well, climb in and follow the ladder down to the lower level.

Inside the Well – Small Key #3

Within the well, you’ll find a small chest containing our next small key. Open the chest, grab the key and then climb out either side of the well and head back into the Main Hall.

Main Hall

Make your way to the locked door on the western side of the Main Hall. It should be directly in the center of the western wall. It should be the next door, counterclockwise from where we played the Song of Time to make the big blue block vanish.

West Hallway

Kill the Large Skulltula with your Hookshot and continue on through the next door.

Block Puzzle Room – West

As soon as you enter, a Flaming Blue Skull will attack, defeat it and then make your way up the next two ladders.

Up here Navi will stop you and point out the marks on the ground. For this Puzzle, the first thing we want to do is grab the Blue Block that is to the left of you.

  1. You want to PULL it towards you until it lines up with the corner of the wall.
  2. Head around to the left side of the Block and push it all the way to the back.
  3. Then finally, head around to the other side of the block through the hallway and push it until it ‘clicks’ into a hole in the ground.

Before climbing onto the Blue Block, make your way back to the nearby ladder that we revealed by moving the Blue Block.

Up here on the higher floor, you’ll find a Red Block. Push it all the way to the end, as far as it will go, until it hits a wall.

Hop back down to where the Blue Block is and climb on top of it, you can now climb to a nearby ledge from the top of the Blue Block.

Head around the corner to find the Red Block and push it again until it ‘clicks’ into place as well. Continue forward and climb the ladder to the area with two Flaming Skulls. Defeat them and then use one of your Small Keys on the locked door to progress forward.

Twisted Corridor – West

Head through the warped corridor and into the next room.

Wallmaster Room – West

As you enter, Navi will warn you of a new enemy that lives in this room, the Wallmaster. As you stand in this room, a shadow will grow around Link’s feet, and eventually, the monster will drop from the ceiling, grab you, cause a whole heart of damage, and return you to the beginning of the Forest Temple. You can avoid this by simply moving quickly through this room.

Jump to the platform in front of you and then turn right and jump again, use another Small Key to open the locked door.

Joelle’s Room (Red Poe Sister)

Here you’ll notice paintings with one of the Poe Sisters on them as you head down the stairs. We can’t do anything to her yet so just make your way downstairs and head through the next door.

Fairy Bow Room

As you enter the door will lock behind you and another Stalfos will spawn. Defeat him and a platform above will lower to fill in the hole in the floor. Unfortunately, this also spawns two more Stalfos for you to defeat. If you take too long to defeat one, the other will also join the fight.

After you’ve defeated all three Stalfos, a chest containing the Fairy Bow will appear in the center of the arena. Open it and claim your prize.

From this room head back through the door we entered from, and make your way back to the room with the Red and Blue Blocks by just backtracking.

Block Puzzle Room – West

As you enter from the twisted corridor, you’ll need to take out the two Blue Flaming Skulls up here. Then turn to face the doorway and you’ll see an “Eye” symbol above it. Use your new Fairy Bow to shoot it with an arrow.

This will straighten the Twisted Corridor and allow us to collect the Boss Key. Head through the door into the now Straightened Corridor.

Twisted Corridor (Straightened) – West

Head into the room and jump down to the lower area to find a large colorful chest containing the Boss Room Key. In the Adult Link Dungeons, you’ll require a key like this to reach each of the Boss Battles for the Temples.

Nearby you’ll find a hole in the ground leading to a lower level. Jump in.

Blue Skull Room

In the area you’ve just dropped into, there will be two of the Blue Flaming Skulls to defeat. Defeat them to unlock the exit. Head out and you’ll find yourself in one of the upper areas of the Northwest Outdoor Ruins area.

Northwest Outdoor Ruins – Upper Area

From where you enter, you can jump across to the top of the nearby ruins with the small recovery hearts scattered across them.

Gold Skulltula #52 – Forest Temple Northwest Outdoor Ruins

If you head to the end of this small platform at the very end you’ll be able to see the next Golden Skulltula high up on the wall. Use your Bow to defeat it and then the Hookshot to claim the Token.

Jump back to the platform you came through the door onto. Defeat the Large Deku Baba ahead of you and ignore the door straight ahead of you for now, instead head into the last alcove on the right and through the door.

Floormaster Room – Small Key #4

Defeat the Floormaster with your sword, as it is dying it will split into three weaker versions of itself that will try to flee. You’ll need to quickly chase them down and defeat them, otherwise, they will regrow into the original Floormaster again. An easy way to do this is to charge a Spinning Slash attack as the Floormaster is about to split, release the charged spin as it splits to wipe them all out together.

Grab the Small Key out of the chest that spawns in and then head back out.

Northwest Outdoor Ruins – Upper Area

This time head to the right through the other door that was at the end of this area. The one we avoided taking just a moment ago.

Block Puzzle Room – West

Jump down and defeat the Blue Skull, then climb up the Blue and Red Blocks all the way to the top of this area again. This time use your bow to shoot the Silver Eye switch again to ‘retwist’ the hallway. Head through the door again.

Twisted Corridor – West

Enter the door and you’ll find the Corridor is twisted again. Make your way through and jump across the platforms, taking the door on the right.

Joelle’s Room (Red Poe Sister) – Small Key #5

Now that we have the Fairy Bow we can challenge the Poe Sisters that took the flames at the start of the Forest Temple.

In each Poe Sister’s room, you’ll need to shoot the pictures that they appear in. If you get too close though they’ll run, so snipe them with your Bow from where you first see them. Once the first picture with the Poe Sister has disappeared, she’ll move into another, this will repeat until you have shot all three images she appears in. As soon as all three have been shot, the Poe Sister will appear at the bottom of the stairs to fight you.

Head down the stairs to face her, keep your Shield up for the fight hit her with your Sword or Bow each time there is an opening. Once she’s been defeated, the Red Torches in the central area will relight and a small chest will spawn in the area where you fought. Open it to grab another Small Key.

Head through the nearby door into the next area.

Fairy Bow Room

There’s nothing more to do in here, so just head straight through into the next room.

Beth’s Room (Blue Poe Sister) – Compass

Exactly the same as the last Poe Sister’s Room, you’ll need to shoot her pictures and then defeat her on the lower floor. Defeating her will restore the Blue Flame in the main room and cause a large chest to spawn in containing the Compass for the Forest Temple.

Grab the Compass and head back up to the top of the area and use a Small Key on the locked door to go through.

Wallmaster Room – East

As you enter, Navi will let you know about the presence of another Wallmaster enemy that will drop from the roof if you stay too long. Jump down and climb the ladder to your right and head through the door into another hallway.

Twisted Corridor (Straightened) – East

Avoid the two floating Skull enemies and use another Small Key on the locked door at the end of the hallway to proceed.

Frozen Eye Puzzle Room

This room features an “eye” switch covered in ice, as well as several platforms rotating around a central platform with a lit torch on it. You’ll need to jump onto one of the rotating platforms, pull out your Fairy Bow, and shoot an arrow so that it passes through the torches’ flame and into the frozen eye switch. This will melt the ice, activate the switch, and open the way forward. Alternatively, you can simply cast Din’s Fire beneath the eye switch to remove the ice, allowing you to shoot it normally.

Activating this switch will twist the prior hallway we came through. Head back the way you came into the last hallway.

Twisted Corridor – East

Run straight to the center of the room where you’ll find a new hole in the floor. Jump down to access the lower levels.

Checkerboard Puzzle Room

Once you drop down to this long hallway, Navi will let you know that the ceiling in this room will drop. Once it falls you’ll see that sections are missing from it where you can safely stand when it drops.

The first tile you want to make your way to is the tile with the floor switch. Hit it and wait for the ceiling to raise once more. Run forward and make your way to the tile with the chest on it, open the chest for some arrows, then make your way through the door into the next room.

Amy’s Room (Green Poe Sister)

Once you enter you’ll need to be prepared to complete another Block Puzzle. To begin, shoot the picture of the Green Poe on the wall and several blocks will fall from the ceiling and a timer will start. You now have to push and pull the blocks together to form the image of the Green Poe Sister. One block is not part of the picture, so push that out of the way and then move three of the other blocks towards the fourth block to complete the image.

If you fail, simply exit and re-enter to try again.

Completing the puzzle will spawn the Green Poe Sister, she fights exactly the same as the last two. Defeating her will make the Green Flame return and unlock the nearby door. Head through to continue.

Skulltula Hallway

Use your Hookshot to defeat the Large Skulltula and continue through the next door back into the Main Hall.

Main Hall – Meg (Purple Poe Sister)

As you re-enter the Main Hall you’ll notice the fourth Poe Sister is waiting for us in the center of the area. As soon as you approach the battle will begin.

This Poe will make four copies of itself to attack. If you don’t attack the correct one you’ll get hit and take a half heart of damage. Wait for them to stop moving and the real one will spin one more time than the other three. Strike her with an arrow from the Fairy Bow after you figure out which the real one is.

Do this five times and she’ll be defeated, this is the fourth and final of the torches that we needed re-lighted to go down to the basement levels.

The elevator in the center of the area will pop up, hop inside when you’re ready to continue.

Spinning Room

Here in this room you’ll find two large blocks on either side you can push on to spin the room. There are several openings around the room that will line up with rooms on the outside, as you spin the room. There are three switches to press while you’re turning the room that will open the doorway for us to continue on.

Gold Skulltula #53

One of the rooms you can access in this spinning area contains the next Gold Skulltula. It’s in a side room with a chest. Behind the chest, on the wall, you’ll find the Gold Skulltula.

Hit the switches and continue through the next door, use the Boss Key to gain access, and head up to face off against the Boss of the Forest Temple, Phantom Ganon.

Forest Temple Boss Battle: Phantom Ganon

Phase 1: Illusion Paintings

Enter and walk up the steps into the arena, when you try to leave you’ll be locked in, and Phantom Ganon will appear.

The gimmick to this Boss fight is that he will ride into one of the paintings on the walls. From there, you’ll find several paintings that will then show him riding towards you. You need to guess which is the correct one and shoot it with an arrow as a portal appears for him to re-enter the world.

The fake versions of him in the paintings will turn and ride away at the last second, while the real one will transition out of the painting and throw a bolt of electricity into the arena. This attack deals 2 whole hearts of damage and is the reason why some people struggle with this fight, he hits like a truck.

Make sure you’ve got at least 1 fairy in a bottle, for a free revive if the worst happens. But, you can also avoid the electricity by standing in one of the corners of the room. The shockwave won’t actually reach you if you’re standing in a corner. The only issue is that it then becomes difficult to target the paintings behind you.

Phase 2: Parry Practice

After five successful arrows have hit Ganon in the paintings, his horse will leave and he’ll float into the center of the arena.

For this phase, he’ll float in the center of the arena and throw electric orbs at Link. You need to time your sword strikes to knock the orbs back at Ganon. He will also parry these orbs, so some of these back-and-forth sessions can go on for 4-5 strikes.

Once he misses and gets stunned, he’ll fall to the ground and you’ll be able to hit him. Use Jump Attacks to deal double damage if you want to speed up the process. But after you’ve landed the equivalent of thirteen standard hits he will be beaten.

You’ll get a brief message of Ganondorf scolding the failed creation, before the Blue Light and the Heart Container appear. Make sure to grab the Heart Container to increase your life bar, then enter the Blue Light.

Sage of the Forest Temple

You’ll get a short few scenes where you reunite with Saria, she’ll explain that she has now awakened as the Sage of the Forest Temple to help you restore Hyrule before she hands over the Forest Medallion. You’ll then be sent back to the Kokiri Forest.

Kokiri Forest

You’ll arrive in the area where you first met the Deku Tree, here you’ll meet his Sprout. He’ll pass on some information about Link’s past, and how you came to be in the Kokiri Forest in the first place.

When you try to leave the clearing, Navi will inform you that the next stop should be back to the Temple of Time. If you head back you’ll run into Sheik who will teach you the Prelude of Light song for the Ocarina. This will allow you to teleport to the Temple of Time whenever you want. You’ll also be given the ability to put the Master Sword back and return to being a child. This opens up some more things we can gather, but for now, let’s grab some items as an adult first.

Hyrule Field

Head for the exit in Kokiri Forest and out into Hyrule Field. Use your Ocarina to call Epona if you didn’t leave her parked just outside the woods.

Our first stop is to go grab an upgrade for our new Fairy Bow, so make your way over to Kakariko Village.

Kakariko Village

When we were a child there was an unfinished building in Kakariko Village, it’s now been finished and the Shooting Gallery can now be found here.

It’s exactly the same as the version we completed as a child. Use your Bow to shoot all the targets and you’ll win yourself an upgraded Quiver for the Fairy Bow.

Heart Piece #23 – 50 Gold Skulltula’s Reward

While we’re in town, you can also head over to the House of Skulltula and grab any outstanding prizes. We’ve collected more than fifty Gold Skulltula’s at this point which means you’ll be able to claim the Heart Piece from the family. This is the last prize of note from collecting these Tokens. The next reward occurs at 100 Tokens and gives you infinite Rupees. Which are completely useless by then.

With all of that wrapped up, make your way back out into Hyrule Field. This next quest is to obtain the fourth and final Empty Bottle of the game, it’s entirely optional, and quite time-consuming so feel free to skip it, unless you want to 100% the game.

Big Poe Hunting Side Quest – Hyrule Market Town Ghost Shop

Big Poe Hunting Side Quest – Zelda Ocarina of Time

Hyrule Field

From Kakariko Village make your way back into Hyrule Field and then head for Hyrule Castle Town.

Hyrule Castle Town – Ghost Shop

The screen you arrive on after entering the town, the area that used to hold the Guardhouse, now contains the Ghost Shop. Head inside and speak to the owner.

Now that we have both the Fairy Bow and Epona we can go Ghost Hunting for the owner of this shop. You’ll need to find specific Poe’s out in Hyrule Field, defeat them, capture the souls in an Empty Bottle and then bring them back here to trade in, before you can go grab another.

Head back out into Hyrule Field to begin.

Hyrule Field – Poe Hunting

First of all, the way that these particular Poe’s spawn is by Link walking/riding over a certain location. They are all set to spawn at fixed locations.

Once a Poe spawns it will begin to flee, you’ll need to chase after it on Epona and shoot it with the Fairy Bow while riding. Two arrows will defeat them so you’ll need to hit them twice. You’ll then need to ride over to the soul it leaves behind and catch it in a bottle. You can only hold one of these special Poe spirits at a time, so you’ll need to catch it and then head back to trade it in at the Hyrule Castle Town Gatehouse (Ghost Shop). Then you can head out to hunt and catch another.

Catching and trading in all 10 of these Large Poe spirits to the Shop Owner will mean you’ll receive the fourth and final Empty Bottle of the game.

All of these Poe’s can be a little finicky to spawn. So use the images and descriptions as a guide, but you may need to play around to figure out the exact spawn location for the Poe.

Large Poe #1

Large Poe 1 Hyrule Field – The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time

The first Poe can be found as you ride away from Hyrule Castle Town. Take a right at the very first split in the path and Poe will spawn and start to run away. Chase it down and then capture it in a bottle. Return it to the Ghost Shop and then head back out into Hyrule Field to continue.

Large Poe #2

Large Poe 2 Hyrule Field – The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time

In front of the entrance to Lon Lon Ranch, you’ll find a tree. Ride Epona between Lon Lon Ranch and the tree, heading west. This will spawn the next Poe for you to collect.

Large Poe #3

Head to the northwest corner of Hyrule Field, here you’ll find a ton of small bushes, ride through them heading south to trigger this Poe. One of the bushes is the spawn trigger so it can take some riding around to figure out which one does it.

Large Poe #4

In the area between Lon Lon Ranch and the entrance to Gerudo Valley, you’ll find a tree along the path. Riding along the right side of the tree, heading north, with Lon Lon Ranch on your right-hand side should spawn the Poe.

Large Poe #5

At the entrance to Gerudo Valley where the road splits, one path leads around Lon Lon Ranch and the other to the entrance of Gerudo Valley. Ride south following the path and you should spawn the Poe between the wall and the raised section of ground on the left. Since they spawn and move in the direction opposite to where you’re riding, you’ll need to line this one up so that it runs along the path and doesn’t hit a wall and disappear.

Large Poe #6

Head to the south part of Hyrule Field, between the entrances to the Kokiri Forest and Lake Hylia. Here you’ll find a bunch of trees and bushes, running through the ones closest to the center of the map will make the Poe appear.

Large Poe #7

The same area as Poe #6. If you ride by the south side of the regular brown boulder you find in this area you’ll spawn the Poe. Try and ride in the direction of Lon Lon Ranch.

Large Poe #8

If you draw a line on the map between the entrance to Kokiri Forest and Lon Lon Ranch, there is a section of road on the map that is in a ‘y’ shape. Head there and you’ll trigger the Poe to appear by riding through the top, inside portion of the ‘y’ shape.

Large Poe #9

To the east of Lon Lon Ranch is a section of wall out in Hyrule field that roughly makes a ‘v’ shape. I found it easiest to spawn the Poe by riding Epona along the north-south portion of the wall. Others have found that standing on the higher portion of the wall, towards the center of the ‘v’ was a better way to spawn it.

Large Poe #10

Near the entrance to Kakariko Village, you’ll find a section of the field, overhanging the river. The Poe spawns by either running along the water underneath this spot. Or when you’re standing on top of this overhang roughly running in the direction of Zora’s Domain.

Turn in the last Poe to the Ghost Shop owner and you’ll receive a shiny new Empty Bottle for your trouble.

Temple of Time

If you haven’t already, make your way back to the Temple of Time to meet Shiek once more, and learn the Prelude of Light. This song will allow you to teleport to the Temple of Time to change between child and adult Link whenever you need.

We’re going to need this to collect some things soon so may as well go and meet her now. Head to where we retrieved the Master Sword, now that the Forest Temple is complete, to trigger the scene. Afterward, we’ll pick up the story back in Lake Hylia as we make our way toward the Fire Temple.

Fire Temple - Zelda Ocarina of Time

Fire Temple

The next dungeon is the Fire Temple, located in Death Mountain. We’ll head here next to meet up with an old friend and help rescue the Gorons.

In the Fire Temple, you’ll obtain the Megaton Hammer, a heavy weapon capable of triggering rusted switches and inflicting heavy damage on enemies.
