Balfonheim Port – Final Fantasy XII The Zodiac Age

Balfonheim Port Final Fantasy XII The Zodiac Age
Balfonheim Port – Final Fantasy XII The Zodiac Age

Balfonheim Port

Once all of the scenes have finished playing out, you’ll regain control of Vaan. If you have the Gil already spare, then there are a ton of new Weapons, Armors, and Magicks here to purchase. Or you can wait until you’ve completed some of the side quests we’re about to undertake, as you may obtain some of the gear for free.

Sea Breeze Lane

In the Sea Breeze Lane area of Balfonheim Port, you can find a Cartographer Moogle and a one-time spawn chest containing 5,840 Gil. While you’re here buy some Gysahl Greens from Dyce the Merchant near the Save Crystal as well.

Chivany Breakwater

In this area, you can find a Fishing Enthusiast, speak to him twice and enquire about his Rod. Make your way over towards the Aerodrome, but don’t go inside, instead turn around and head back to where the Fishing Enthusiast was, and grab the now abandoned Fishing Rod. This allows us to participate in the Fishing Sidequest a little later on.

Ann’s Sisters Sidequest – Final Fantasy XII The Zodiac Age

Sidequest: Ann’s Sisters

Head over to the Aerodrome and book a passage on a flight, make sure to pick Leisure Craft. Once on the flight, move into the Sky Saloon and speak to the Chief Steward. Agree to help him and you’ll receive a letter that you need to show to all 7 of Ann’s Sisters. Each of the Sisters is a Chief Steward on another flight route. Below you’ll find the routes you’ll need to take and the names of the Sister’s to look for:

The Great Cockatrice Escape – Final Fantasy XII The Zodiac Age

Sidequest: Great Cockatrice Escape

Giza Plains (Dry) – Nomad Village

You’ll need to wait for the Dry Season to begin before visiting the Nomad Village in the Giza Plains, here you can turn in multiple hunts if you haven’t already. Speak with Elder Brunoa about the ring from the Croakadile Hunt, and then speak to Nanau, who is behind Brunoa’s Tent. Turn in the Gil Snapper Hunt to earn yourself 3,000 Gil and a Phobos Glaze.

Head inside the Cockatrice Pen in the center of the area and speak to the child Terra inside of it. She will let you know that the Cockatrice have all run away and she wishes she had an item that would allow her to talk to them. The item she is describing is called the “Feather of the Flock” and is available to be found in the Mark of the Beast area of the Giza Plains (Rains). We should have picked it up during the fight with the Gil Snapper, so as long as you currently have it, you can now continue with the Great Cockatrice Escape Quest.

Eruyt Village – Fane of the Path

Head over to the Eruyt Village to find your first Cockatrice. In the Fane of the Path area, you’ll find a Cockatrice with Mjrn. Speak to them both, afterward you’ll find a small glimmer on the ground behind Vaan. Grab it and then speak to Mjrn, she’ll recommend collecting more of these stones for the Cockatrice.

The SpiritwoodHead to the south-most dead-end and you'll find the final stone under the large arch.

Deliver the stones to Mjrn and then speak to Chit, the Cockatrice. He’ll drop another stone, give this stone over to Mjrn as well. After the conversations are over, Chit will agree to head back to the Giza Plains and you’ll receive a Yoichi Bow for your work.

Rabanastre – North End

Head over to Rabanastre’s North End area next. Here you’ll find our next Cockatrice. Look for him in the north part of the loop, standing in an Alcove. Once you speak to him, he will run away. If you approach him from behind or too quickly from the side, he will use his turbo thrusters to escape you. To speak to him again you need to approach him slowly (walking) from the side while he is running past. The easiest way to do this is to hide in the pillars that are close to his route, near either the Gambit shop or the Clan Hall.

Once you speak to him, select “Erm… no?” He’ll stop running around and instead you can find him just south of where you first encountered him. Speak to him and let him know that Chit has returned to the Giza Plains and he will follow suit. He’ll give you a Deathbringer for your hard work.

Jahara – Lull of the Land

Here you’ll find a large group of Garif has gathered around a Cockatrice off to the side as you enter. Speak to the Herder, then the Cockatrice, then speak to the Herder again. Tell him where the Cockatrice, Shurry, came from, he’ll ask you to speak to the Great Chief about it.

Head into the Elderknoll area and speak to Great Chief Uball-Ka, he’ll give you a gift for the Cockatrice. Return and give it to Shurry, then speak to the Herder for a reward of a Platinum Dagger.

Dalmasca Estersand – South Bank Village

Teleport into the South Bank Village and speak to the small Cockatrice directly in front of you. Next speak with Tchigri, the boy who operates the Ferry that crosses to the other side of the river. Tell him you’d like to cross and use the option to take Nathyl with you. Use the Ferry to cross again, this time taking no one with you.

Speak to Tchigri again and this time cross with Arryl. So now both Arryl and Nathyl should be together on the opposite bank. Take the Ferry back to the Bank with the South Bank Village again.

This time cross and take Sassan across with you. Follow him and speak to him to eventually have him return to Giza Plains and receive a Koga Blade for your trouble.

Archades/Old Archades

Teleport into Archades, you’ll need the Sandalwood Chop to access the area with the Cockatrice, so if you haven’t got that yet, head over to our guide for Archades to grab it. Once you’ve got that, make your way down to Old Archades first, here you want to speak to the Cockatrice in the northeast of the Alley of Low Whispers area. Speak to him and then make your way back into Archades.

Head into the Tsenoble area and speak to the Docent in the north end to gain access to the Grand Arcade. Remember you can only enter here if you have a Sandalwood Chop. Inside you’ll find a large Cockatrice, speak to her and tell her about the other Cockatrice in Old Archades. She’ll run off and leave you a Tumulus.

Balfonheim Port – Sea Breeze Lane

Speak to the Chocobo Wrangler by the Pen, let her see the feather to trigger some dialogue from the Cockatrice hiding in with the Chocobos. Afterward, a Miffed Moogle will walk up to the Pen, speak to her then speak to Gurdy, the Moogle that rents you Chocobos. The Miffed Moogle will step into the conversation and you’ll eventually receive a Defender for your efforts.

Giza Plains (Dry) – Nomad Village

Now that you’ve returned all of the Cockatrice, head back to the Nomad Village. Speak to Terra in the Pen for your final reward of two Hi-Ethers.

Braegh Hunt – Final Fantasy XII The Zodiac Age

Rodeo To The Death – Braegh Hunt

You should have a few outstanding hunts at this point so let’s finish a few of them. The first is the Rodeo to the Death Hunt for Braegh. To gain access to this Mark, you’ll first need to defeat another Boss to open the way.

The Salikawood

Use a Save Crystal to Teleport over to the Salikawood and make your way to the northwest, into the area called the Grand Bower. Here you’ll trigger a fight with the King Bomb Boss.

Boss Battle: King Bomb

Boss:King Bomb
HP:37,596
Elemental Weakness:Water
Status Effect Weakness:Reverse, Silence, Oil, Disease, Immobilize, Sap, Slow
Resistances:- Fire(Absorb)
- Ice, Lightning, Wind, Earth, Dark, Holy (50% Effective)
- N/A (Nullified)
Steal:Bomb Shell
Fire Crystal
Bomb Fragment
Final Fantasy XII The Zodiac Age - King Bomb Boss Battle

King Bomb attacks using Fire Magick and can inflict the Oil Status Effect, which increases the damage you take from Fire Magick. You can silence it to prevent these, or simply have someone cast Shell on everyone to keep the damage to a manageable level. Below 20% health, the King Bomb will attempt to heal itself using Renew, so as it gets close, use a Quickening Chain to finish the fight. If it does manage to get Renew off then you’ll just need to beat it down again.

Now that King Bomb is defeated, the rest of the Salikawood is now open to us. You can also now reach the Nabreus Deadlands and Necrohol of Nabudis from exits past here.

Take the exit into the Corridor of Ages area, near the southwest exit you’ll find our target, Braegh.

Boss Battle: Braegh

Boss:Braegh
HP:43,283
Elemental Weakness:Ice
Status Effect Weakness:Reverse, Sleep, Silence, Disease, Disable, Immobilize, Sap
Resistances:- Lightning(Absorb)
- N/A (50% Effective)
- Fire, Water, Wind, Earth, Dark, Holy (Nullified)
Steal:Storm Magicite
Storm Crystal
Grimoire Aidhed
Final Fantasy XII The Zodiac Age - Braegh Boss Battle

Equipping your main battle party with Diamond Armlets will make you immune to the Lightning Damage that Braegh will inflict during the fight. It also has the ability to inflict Sap and Immobilize status effects during the fight, these are easily cured if you have a character with Remedy Lore. Braegh will occasionally try to swap your HP and MP with a spell called Invert as well. Stay on top of your healing and this shouldn’t pose much of an issue. If you have strong Ice Magick or the Icebrand weapon then these will make short work of this hunt.

To claim the reward for the Hunt you’ll need to return to the Babbling Vale in the Mosphoran Highwaste and speak to Va’Kansa, for 1,700 Gil, a Caliper, and a Hi-Ether.

Three Medallions Side Quest

The Three Medallions Sidequest – Final Fantasy XII The Zodiac Age

The Three Medallions Side Quest is available to partially complete now, just know that the final bosses for the quest will likely still be outside of what you can handle for now.

To initiate this quest you’ll need to make your way to the Nabreus Deadlands, which is past the area guarded by the King Bomb Boss encounter. Take the north exit from where you fought the King Bomb into the Piebald Path area, then continue north and use the exit here to arrive in the Nabreus Deadlands.

Once you arrive you’ll be in the Greencrag area of the Nabreus Deadlands, take the north exit into the next area to arrive in The Muted Scarp. Here you’ll meet Ma’kleou, speak with him to hear about his followers searching for Medallions.

From here you now need to make your way back to a Save Crystal and teleport back to Rabanastre.

Head down into Low-Town and into Old Dalan’s house. Here you’ll find one of Ma’kleou’s followers called, Roh’kenmou. Speak to him to learn about the First Medallion that he is looking for. If you’ve previously completed the Orthros Hunt you’ll be able to hand over the first of the three Fragments he is seeking straight away, the other two pieces are explained below.

The First Medallion

The First Medallion is available after you have completed the Wraith, White Mousse, and Orthros Hunts. After you’ve turned in the Wraith Hunt, you’ll be able to enter the Residence, in Low-Town, that the Petitioner was outside of. Inside on the Table, you’ll be able to read a Dusty Letter. This letter gives you a clue as to how to obtain this next Fragment. You’ll need to have the Letter with you to be able to obtain the Fragment, so go grab it first.

Orthros Hunt – Blackend Fragment

Defeating the Orthros Hunt will get you the Blackened Fragment as part of the rewards. This Blackened Fragment together with two other Fragments, will combine to create the First Medallion. So you should already have the Blackend Fragment by now. Head down into the Garamscythe Waterway to grab the next Fragment. You’ll also need to have defeated the White Mousse Hunt in order to obtain the Sluice Gate Key that you’ll need to be able to access the Waterway Controls in the Garamscythe Waterway.

Garamscythe Waterway – Dull Fragment

Head down into the Garamscythe Waterway. Make your way to the Central Waterway Control Area. Here you’ll find 5 switches that control the flow of the water in the various parts of the Waterway.

First of all, turn all of the switches to the “off” position where they are not glowing. Then you want to activate them in the following order:

  • No. 11 Waterway Control “On”
  • No. 4 Waterway Control “On”
  • No. 11 Waterway Control “Off”
  • No. 3 Waterway Control “On”
  • No. 4 Waterway Control “Off”

You’ll hear a small chime if you’ve done it correctly and a glowing stone will now appear on the ground to the south of this area. In the middle of the outer ring. Collect it to acquire the Dull Fragment.

Rabanastre – Grimy Fragment

As you exit the Garamscythe Waterway back up into Low-Town you’ll encounter Kytes just outside the exit. Speak to him, and then head to the southeast section of Low-Town to one of the dead-ends to find a child called Filo. Speak to them as well.

Your next destination will be the Southern Plaza of Rabanastre, near the fountain you should find an NPC called “Curious Woman”. Listen to her story and then make your way over to the Muthru Bazaar.

In the Muthru Bazaar, you want to speak to a “Merchant” about halfway up, he also happens to be a Bangaa. Ask him about the Necklace. Next, make your way over to Yugri’s Magick Shop.

To the left as you enter you’ll find a “Sotted Imperial” speak to him and tell him about the woman near the fountain.

Return to Low-Town and find Filo in the southeast again, tell her you need to speak to the woman. Agree to go with her and speak to the “Sotted Imperial” again.

For your trouble, you’ll receive the Grimy Fragment. Return to Dalan’s House and speak to Roh’kenmou to turn them all in.

The Second Medallion

You’ll gain the Second Medallion in Old Archades, make sure you’ve spoken to Roh’kenmou first in the Nabreus Deadlands. You’ll then find one of his followers in Archades in the Magick Shop. Speak to him to learn he sold the Medallion to someone, head down to Old Archades and into the Alley of Muted Sighs. You’re looking for someone called the “Proper Gent” speak to him to get the Medallion back.

Head back to the Magick Shop in Archades and hand over the Medallion to complete this section of the Quest.

The Third Medallion

Return to the Nabreus Deadlands, to the Muted Scarp area, to find all three of the Nu Mou will now be gathered here. Speak to them to learn they intend to give you the three Medallions for your efforts.

To obtain the final Medallion they require you to head to a particular place to claim it. It’s the same place you will encounter the Roblon Hunt. If you have already accepted this hunt from its partitioner then you’ll find the Mark there the first time you visit, you’ll then need to exit and reenter the area to trigger the Medallion scenes.

Head to the area called Slumbermead, in the northwest corner you’ll find a path that does not appear on the minimap that leads north. Follow it to reach the area the Nu Mou were speaking about. A ton of Dead Bones enemies will spawn here to take care.

Head to the Pedastal at the top to trigger a short scene and acquire the final Medallion.

For now, this is as far as you want to take this quest, as the bosses in the next section of it are quite tough. Defeating them will eventually yield a new Esper though, so we’ll be back later.

Area information for Cerobi Steppe of Final Fantasy XII The Zodiac Age

The main exit from the Balfonheim Port leads to an area called the Cerobi Steppe. We’ll be visiting later to do some quests, but just be aware that this area holds some very valuable treasures to be looted. The only problem is that chests have a fairly low spawn rate (20%) and also a very small chance of containing the equipment that you want from it (5%). You also need to be wearing the Diamond Armlet for any of these chests to contain equipment.

Since literally every chest here has the ability to hold a great piece of gear, I’d recommend taking some time and doing some runs through the area opening chests with the Diamond Armlet equipped. Everything available here can also be made at the Bazaar so don’t worry too much if you can’t get some of the gear.

While traveling through you can find the Cleanse Magick in a chest in the center of The Terraced Bank area, it only has a 20% chance to spawn though, so you may need to rezone a bit to make it show up. You can also find the Tecknick, Telekinesis, in the Old Elanise Road area, by the exit to the Tchita Uplands.

Sidequest – Hunts

Visiting any of the Taverns will unlock a ton of new Hunts. Accept them all and let’s get started.

Deathscythe Hunt

To accept the Deathscythe Hunt, speak to Jajim Bazaar in Nalbina. Here you’ll find Popol sitting by the entrance to the Tecknick Shop. Speak to him to accept the Hunt.

Goliath Hunt

Speak to Barrong in the West Ward area of Nalbina to accept this hunt.

Roblon Hunt

Speak to Morgen in the north corner of the West Ward area of Nalbina to accept this hunt.

For now, we’ll be banking these three hunts until after the events at Pharos. So accept them and then continue on.

Bloodwing Hunt and the Zalera Esper – Final Fantasy XII The Zodiac Age

The Deserter’s Revenge – Bloodwing Hunt

Head over to the South Bank Village in Dalmasca Estersands and speak to the Bangaa by the river called No. 381 to accept this hunt.

From the South Bank Village, head south into the Banks of the Nebra area, and then take the southeast exit into the area called the Murmuring Defile. Here you’ll be able to use the Barheim Key we previously acquired, on the Weather-beaten Door to gain access to the Barheim Passage again.

The Zeviah Subterrane

When you enter the Barheim Passage you’ll arrive in The Zeviah Subterrane area. Head north through the Great Central Passage and north again into the North-South Junction. Here you can reactivate the Save Crystal so that you can teleport back any time you want in the future. Head south back into the Great Central Passage.

Great Central Passage

From here take the southwest exit into a dead-end area called Special OP Sector 5.

Special OP Sector 5

Here you will find five chests past the halfway point of the area that can each contain one of the following: Enchanter’s Habit, Diamond Shield, Headband, Glacial Staff, and the Arc Scale (One time only). Grab the items and then head back out through the east exit into the Great Central Passage again and take the northwest exit this time to the East-West Bypass.

East-West Bypass

In the eastern dead-end, you can find chests containing; Gladius and Toxify Magick. Around the midpoint of the area, you can find a chest with some Jujitsu Gi inside. Take the west exit into the Zeviah Span when you’re done.

Zeviah Span

Continue to head south and take the first east branch that leads back north, here you can find a Barheim Candle that unlocks the rest of the map for you.

At the very south end of the area, you’ll find another dead end to the east. Here in a one-time spawn chest, you can find the Kagenui weapon. Backtrack a little, and look for a crashed minecart on the west side of this lower area, interact with it to push it free, and open a way forward. Follow the path south now into the West Annex area.

West Annex

As soon as you enter, make your way to the other north exit and back into a small area of the Zeviah Span, here you’ll find a chest with the Shear Tecknick inside. Grab it and continue south back into the West Annex.

Along the east side of the area, you’ll find a split in the path that leads to two dead-ends, the southern of the two leads to a guaranteed chest for the Fumarole weapon.

Continue south and into the passage that leads west to find Bloodwing.

If you continue down the passage you’ll encounter an Optional Esper, Zalera the Death Seraph, so you can press forward or turn back and Teleport back to the South Bank Village to hand in the Hunt.

Darksteel Hunt – Final Fantasy XII The Zodiac Age

You can accept the Darksteel hunt in Archades, head over, and into the Nilbasse area. Inside of Vint’s Armaments, you’ll find a Homesick Man who will let you formalize the hunt.

Overlord’s most damaging skill is called Pyromania and inflicts Fire damage. Equip your party with as much Fire Resistant gear as possible to minimize the damage you’ll take and make your healer’s job easier. Protect, Shell, and Haste on your party will also be very helpful. You can remove the Overlord’s positive status effects with Dispel and even inflict Blind on him. Below 50% HP the fight will get more intense as he will spam Pyromania even more than before. If you can keep one character in melee range and the rest using ranged weapons then the ranged party members can likely avoid being hit with the constant Pyromanias. Below 20% HP try and finish the fight quickly with Quickenings as usual.

Return to the Bulward’s Tecknicks in Archadia to claim your rewards; 3,500 Gil, 2x Hi-Ether’s, and a Teleport Stone.

Lindwyrm Hunt – Final Fantasy XII The Zodiac Age

Old Legends, Decaying Bonds – Lindwyrm Hunt

Head to Old Archades, to the Alley of Muted Sighs. Around the center of the area, you’ll find the Petitioner Fermon. Speak to him to accept the hunt.

To find the Lindwyrm you need to head to the Garden of Life’s Circle in the Tchita Uplands. You’ll need to rezone in the area until you have Cloudy, not Rainy, weather. When you get the weather right, then the Lindwyrm will appear in the area.

Protection from Sleep and Stone is important for this fight. Start the fight with Dispel and get ready to use it throughout the fight as well. The Lindwyrm will heal itself multiple times and cast Greater Barrier after each heal.

If you can get Blind and Silence on the Lindwyrm then this fight becomes significantly easier, set up gambits so that one of your characters will always keep these effects on the Lindwyrm.

For your own party try to maintain Shell, Protect, Regen, and Bubble status. These will help if you can’t get the Silence and Blind to stick on the Lindwyrm.

Once the battle is over, head back to Fermon in Old Archades to turn in the hunt and receive; 4,200 Gil, 2x Minerva Bustier’s, and a Hi-Ether.

Vyraal Hunt – Final Fantasy XII The Zodiac Age

The Mark’s Petitioner is found in Balfonheim Port, in The Whitecap Tavern. You’ll find her sitting on a window ledge, speak to her to accept the hunt.

Head back to the Tavern and turn in the completed Hunt to receive; 3,500 Gil, a Halberd, and an Aegis Shield. She’ll also give you a Dragon Scale she found.

Trickster Hunt – Final Fantasy XII The Zodiac Age

Head for the Frozen Brook in the Paramina Rift area. When you enter an NPC will join you for the hunt, he will join even if the Trickster doesn’t appear. Make sure to clear all the enemies you can from the area then rezone until he notifies you that the Trickster has appeared.

This means you want a Black Mage for this fight and you’ll want their gambits set up to target each of the elemental weaknesses that are possible.

Try to keep your Black Mage alive for the fight as much as possible and as you approach low HP on the Trickster, hit it with as many Quickening Chains as you can. It will spam a highly damaging spell called “Choco-Comet” at low HP that will likely out damage what your healers can restore, resulting in a possible party wipe.

Once the battle is over, return to Gurdy for your reward; 4,800 Gil, and a Deimos Clay.

If you’ve completed the Gil Snapper and Orthros Hunts then you will have also received, and likely sold the Phobos Glaze and the Horakhty’s Flame. Deimos Clay is the last piece you need to sell to unlock the Morbid Urn at the Bazaar. Purchasing this will make enemies start to drop Arcana Items that you can collect.

Antlion Hunt – Final Fantasy XII The Zodiac Age

Antlion Infestation – Antlion Hunt

Make your way to Bhujerba and into the Cloudborne Row, here you’re looking for Niray in the Staras Residence. She’ll give you the Site 3 Key for you to use to access the hunt.

Next, make your way toward the Lhusu Mines. Head all the way to the back area called Site 2, where we last fought the Rocktoise. Along the way, in the Oltam Span area, you’ll trigger a short scene. Once you reach Site 2, you’ll be able to use the Site 3 Key on the old Iron Gate in the corner to open the way forward.

Site 3

In the Site 3 area of the Lhusu Mines, you’ll find three chests that are one-time spawns. Containing a Multiscale, Koga Blade, and the Tumulus. Grab the chests and then take the more southern of the two exits out of the area back into Site 2.

Site 2

Take the eastern passage to find a Gate Switchboard, use it to open a shortcut you can use to get back here faster next time. Take the western exit into the western half of the Shunia Twinspan.

Shunia Twinspan

Follow the path south to the next area.

Transitway 1

Head south as far as you can go here and find the Gate Switch on the small platform to the south, this will open another shortcut for you to use later if you need. Head west into Transitway 2.

Transitway 2

Activate the Save Crystal here to add another location to your Teleport list as well. Take the west exit into the Tasche Span.

Tasche Span

Take the west exit into Site 9.

Site 9

To the west, as you enter will be a dead-end containing an Indigo Pendant. Follow the path south to find a chest with an Iga Blade at roughly the midpoint of the southmost wall. If you continue heading west into the dead-end you’ll find a chest containing the Expose Tecknick as well as our mark.

Final Fantasy XII The Zodiac Age - Antlion Boss Battle

Your first objective needs to be destroying the Killer Mantis enemies that are with the Antlion. He can use Canabalise on them to boost his level and heal himself. Use a Quickening Chain while they’re all grouped to take them out or have a Black Mage set to target the enemies weak to Wind Magic with your strongest Aero spells. Once they are gone, then Antlion becomes much easier, assuming he hasn’t already cannibalized a bunch of them.

Grab the Expose Technick and then make your way back to the Staras Residence to turn in the quest to receive; 4,300 Gil, a Bubble Belt, and a Sickle-Blade. The kids will mention that they dropped the Key in the Mines and maybe it will wash up somewhere.

Use a Save Crystal to head back to the Phon Coast Hunter’s Camp, here near the northeast exit to the next area you can find a “Fallen Bhujerban” and next to him on the ground is a shiny object, pick it up to receive the Site 11 Key for the Lhusu Mines.

Centurio Clan Hall

Head back to Rabanastre and visit Montblanc in the Centurio Clan Hall, by this point he should have a ton of rewards for you, as well as several new Hunts to accept.

You should be able to take the Ancient Man of Mystery and Belito Hunts from Montblanc now. He’s also the Petitioner for both so speak to him again to accept them.

Once you’re done, we’re ready to continue on with the main story.
