Twinleaf Town
Welcome to our 100% Walkthrough for Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. Our adventure begins in Twinleaf Town, the first portion of our guide will cover all the way up to our first Badge, the Coal Badge.
Important Items:
Item: | Where to find: |
---|---|
Running Shoes | Obtained from Mom as part of the Story. |
After completing the Character Creation, you’ll wake up in your room and need to head downstairs. Your Mom will greet you and say that your Rival was looking for you.
Head outside your house and make your way to the Home in the top left of the Town. As you approach the door, your Rival will rush out, before rushing back in.
Follow him upstairs, and then back down and out of the house. Afterward, he’ll make his way out of the town taking the north exit.
Lake Verity
Take the north exit out of Twinleaf Town into Route 201. Here you’ll run back into your Rival who will join you as you travel to Lake Verity to the west.
Once you enter Lake Verity you’ll witness a conversation between a Professor and his Assistant before they quickly leave. Dropping a Briefcase of Pokeballs before they do. Head over and try to inspect the Briefcase, you’ll be attacked by wild Pokemon and need to choose a ball out of the case to do battle with. Whichever you choose becomes your starter Pokemon for the rest of the game.
Picking a Starter Pokemon
Turtwig
Turtwig is the Grass-type starter Pokemon. It evolves twice, at level 18 into Grotle and at level 32 into Torterra. Turtwig changes from a Grass-type to a Grass and Ground-type by the time he becomes Torterra, this gives him access to some very powerful moves like Earthquake.
Turtwig is the easiest of the three starters for new players. He is well-rounded and easy to use. Two early Gym Leaders are weak to Grass-type Pokemon as well. His only real weakness as he grows is a double weakness to Ice-type moves. Having said that, Ice-type moves are fairly uncommon.
Piplup
Piplup is the Water-type starter Pokemon. It evolves twice, at level 16 into Prinplup and at level 36 into Empoleon. Piplup changes from a Water-type to a Water and Steel-type by the time he becomes Empoleon, his Steel-type gives him quite a number of resistances and high defense.
Piplup is considered a balanced starter choice and is strong against the first Gym Leader. Late in the game, he also becomes very useful when tackling the Elite Four. Water-type Pokemon are quite common in this game, meaning you’ll have access to plenty of substitutes if you don’t choose him.
Chimchar
Chimchar is the Fire-type starter Pokemon. It evolves twice, at level 14 into Monferno and at level 36 into Infernape. Chimchar changes from a Fire-type to a Fire and Fighting-type after its first evolution, both of his types are uncommon in this game, meaning that he fills a niche in your team that is not easy to replace.
Chimchar is weak to the first two Gym’s making him a tougher Pokemon to start the game with, but late game he becomes an absolute powerhouse.
Once you pick your starter you’ll be thrown into a battle with a level 2 Starly. Defeat it and then make your way back to Twinleaf Town.
On the way back you’ll run into the Professor again, he’ll leave and ask that you visit him at his Lab when you get a chance. You’ll be automatically taken back to your home after the discussion. Here, your Mom will tell you to make your way over to Sandgem Town, where you’ll also find the Professor.
Just before you leave she’ll hand over the Running Shoes. These will allow you to travel much faster.
Make your way north out of Twinleaf Town again and back into Route 201.
Route 201
Route 201 Pokemon
Pokemon: | How to Find: | Rarity: |
---|---|---|
Bidoof | Grass | Common |
Starly | Grass | Common |
Nidoran ♀ | Poke Radar | Uncommon |
From Twinleaf Town, we need to first head north into Route 201 and then head east towards Sandgem Town.
Along the way you’ll begin to encounter wild Pokemon, we can’t do much catching yet until we reach the next town and begin to buy some Pokeballs. Speak to everyone you pass on Route 201 they all have handy bits of information, and one will even give you 10 free Potions.
Before long you’ll reach Sandgem Town.
Sandgem Town
Sandgem Town has multiple exits from it and primarily houses Professor Rowan’s Lab. North of Sandgem Town is Route 202, to the west of Sandgem Town is Route 201, and to the south is Route 219, which leads to a large body of water that we cannot do much with for now. Stop by Route 219 and grab the free Antidote waiting by the water when you can.
As soon as you enter Sandgem Town you’ll trigger a series of scenes between yourself, Professor Rowan, and his Assistant. You’ll finally receive your Pokedex, and he’ll task you with finding all the Pokemon in the region for him. At the moment this is limited to the Sinnoh Pokedex, of roughly 150 Pokemon. Towards the end of the game, we can expand this by unlocking the National Pokedex. In order to do this, you’ll need to have SEEN or caught every Pokemon in the game. This alone is reason enough for you to go out of your way to make sure to battle every trainer you encounter. Some Pokemon are exceptionally difficult to find, so viewing them in battle may be the fastest way for you to unlock their slot in the Pokedex.
After the conversation with the Professor, head outside the Lab and his Assistant will take you around Town to introduce you to a few places and things you need to know. The building with the Red Roof is the Pokemon Center, here you can heal for free, the building with the Blue Roof is the Poke-Mart, where you can purchase Pokeballs and other items. Both of these are critical to your adventure.
*When in the Poke-Mart, always buy your Pokeballs in groups of 10, you’ll be rewarded with a bonus ball for free*
Make sure to stock up on Pokeballs so that you can start to capture some Pokemon as well.
After the tour from the Professor’s Assistant, you’ll be told to go home and make sure your Mom is ok with you going out on your journey.
Twinleaf Town
From Sandgem Town, head west back through Route 201. Make sure to pick up some new Pokemon as you go, and make your way back to Twinleaf Town. Head back into your house and talk to your Mom, she’ll give you a Guidebook and your Rival’s Mom will stop by with a Parcel for you to hand to them, the next time you see them.
From here, make your way back to Sandgem Town and then take the northern path onto Route 202.

---|---|
Youngster Tristan | Starly (lvl 5) |
Lass Natalie | Bidoof x2 (lvl 3) |
Youngster Logan | Shinx (lvl 5) |
Route 202 connects Sandgem Town and Jubilife City. From Sandgem Town, head north and towards the left to encounter the Professor’s Assistant. They will run you through a quick tutorial on how to catch Pokemon. Afterward, you’ll be gifted 5 Pokeballs to get you started as well. Remember that weakened Pokemon are easier to catch, the lower the HP the higher the chance to catch. Pokemon are also easier to catch if you inflict a status condition like Burn, Freeze, Paralysis, Sleep, or Poison on them.
On this route, you’ll begin finding your first Pokemon Trainers to battle. Make sure to fight them all if you’re going for a 100% Pokedex. With this game, your Pokedex fills just by seeing the Pokemon in battle, not just with the ones you capture. This makes it important to seek out all the Trainers.
Make sure to pick up the new available Pokemon as well. Shinx is a powerful electric-type Pokemon and Kricketot can also be found on this Route during the morning and evening, he also evolves quite early, giving you access to a powerful Bug-type Pokemon.
Continue to follow the path, defeat all the trainers and you’ll eventually reach Jubilife City.
Jubilife City
The next large city we encounter is Jubilife City in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, here we’ll obtain the Poketch and a Quick Claw.
Important Items in Jubilife City
Item: | Where to find: |
---|---|
Poketch | Obtained after finding the three clowns, as part of the story. |
Quick Claw | In a building just north of the Poke Mart, speak to the Girl inside to recieve the item. |
Old Rod | In a building just north of the Poke Mart, speak to the Girl inside to receive the item. |
As soon as you enter Jubilife City you’ll trigger another scene with the Professor’s Assistant. She’ll recommend you attend the Trainers School in the City to learn more about Pokemon.
Trainer School
Pokemon Trainers in the Trainer School
Pokemon Trainer: | Pokemon and Level: |
---|---|
School Kid Harrison | Abra (lvl 6) |
School Kid Christine | Abra (lvl 6) |
You’ll find the Trainer School directly to the left of the Pokemon Center in Jubilife City. Inside you’ll find students who will discuss various aspects of the game with you.
Head to the blackboard at the top of the room to find your Rival, talk to him to hand over the Parcel you received from his mother and he’ll give you a copy of the Town Map.
In the room on the right of the Trainer School, you’ll find two students who will happily battle you. They each have an Abra (lvl 6) that will frequently use the Charge Beam attack, which has a chance of raising the user’s stats each time they use it. This means you’ll need to take them out quickly or risk a complete wipe. Once the battles are over, speak to Harrison (on the left) to receive TM10 Work Up.
The Poketch
Head outside the Trainer School and try to go to the north. You’ll be interrupted by a man who wants you to find three clowns to get one of his “Poketchs” it’s a Pokemon Watch. In order to get yours, you need to find these three clowns that he mentioned and get a coupon from each to trade in for the Poketch. The locations of the clowns are below:
- You’ll find the first of the clowns behind the Pokemon Centre. He’ll ask if a Pokemon grows by defeating others, the answer is “Yes”.
- The second is found northwest of the Pokemon Center, in front of Jubilife TV. He’ll ask if a Pokemon can hold an item, the answer is “Yes”.
- The third and final clown is found to the left of Jubilife TV, in front of the Poketch Company. He’ll ask if Pokemon Moves have types, the answer is “Yes”.
Find the three clowns and answer their questions to receive the coupons, return to the creator to trade them in for your very own Poketch.
While you’re running around the town, make your way to the northwest section of town and head into the building behind the Poke Mart. In here you can speak to a girl near a Pikachu to obtain the Quick Claw item. Giving this to a Pokemon to hold will allow them to sometimes go first in battle, regardless of their Speed stat.
The Old Rod
Head out the western exit from Jubilife City into a small building, speak to the man with the Red Hat, and answer “Yes”, to obtain an Old Rod. Continue west to arrive on Route 218, here you’ll find plenty of water to use your Old Rod. You’ll only be able to catch one thing though, and that’s a Magikarp, so grab one and then head back into Jubilife City.

Head north battling trainers as you go. Further to the north, you’ll encounter the first portion of the Ravaged Path, but you’ll be unable to go any further without the ability to use Rock Smash.
Once you’re done, head back to Jubilife City and take the eastern exit onto Route 203.

Route 203 is the path between Jubilife City and Oreburgh Gate, which leads to Oreburgh City. Oreburgh City is where we will obtain the Coal Badge.
As you leave Jubilife City, heading east on Route 203 you’ll encounter your Rival who will want a quick battle. He’ll have a Lvl 7 Starly and the same starter they took at the start of the game.
While heading east on this Route, you’ll have the chance to encounter Abra in the grass. The easiest way to capture it is to simply toss a ball as soon as the battle begins. If you have a Pokemon with the Taunt move, you can also prevent it from escaping by using its Teleport attack by using Taunt at the start of the battle.
Grab any Pokemon you need, complete all the trainer battles and then continue east into the Oreburgh Gate.

Gyarados | Super Rod (B1F) | Common |
Oreburgh Gate connects Route 203 and Oreburgh City. You won’t be able to explore its lower level until you can use the Rock Smash move outside of battle.
Head right after you enter to be stopped by a Hiker who will promptly hand over HM06 Rock Smash to you. You won’t be able to use the move outside of battle until you obtain the Coal Badge, in Oreburgh City, though.
Defeat the remaining trainers in the cave and take the exit to the east when you’re ready to head into Oreburgh City.
Oreburgh City
Oreburgh City holds our first Gym Badge, as well as the Museum where we can resurrect Fossil Pokemon later on. You’ll also find the Oreburgh Mine south of the city.
Head east from where you exit the Oreburgh Gate to run into a kid who will lead you around the town, ending at the Gym. He’ll let you know you’ll need to head into the Mines to the south in order to get the Gym Leader to come back and open his Gym.
In town, you can find a person that will give you a Dusk Ball if you speak to them. You’ll find them in a building on the northside of town, near the entrance to Oreburgh Gate. You’ll find them on the second floor of the house. The house to the right of this houses a woman who will trade you Abra for a Machop. Machop’s can be found on Route 207 to the north of Oreburgh City.
From here, visit the Pokemon Center if you need and then make your way south into the Oreburgh Mine.
Oreburgh Mine
Pokemon: | How to find: | Rarity: |
---|---|---|
Geodude | Cave | Common |
Zubat | Cave | Common |
Onix | Cave | Uncommon |
You’ll find Oreburgh Mine to the south of Oreburgh City, where we’ll find Roark the Gym Leader of Oreburgh City.
When you first enter the Oreburgh Mine you can find an X Defend to your right. From there head south into the next area.
In the second room head south, then left at the split. You’ll find a few Trainers in here that are all worth battling for the experience and about halfway around the path in this section of cave, you’ll find Roark staring at some rocks. He’s the one in the Red Helmet. Speak to him to send him back to the Gym.
Continue to battle all the trainers and make your way back out of the Cave.
Return to Oreburgh City and make your way into the Gym. Roark uses Rock-type Pokemon, so bring any Water or Grass types you might have.
Oreburgh Gym
Pokemon Trainer: | Pokemon and Level: |
---|---|
Youngster Darius | Geodude (lvl 8) Onix (lvl 8) |
Youngster Jonathon | Geodude (lvl 10) |
Gym Leader Roark | Geodude (lvl 12) Onix (lvl 12) Cranidos (lvl 14) |
Now that we’ve found Roark in the Oreburgh Mine, we can enter the Gym and try to get his Coal Badge.
Fighting, Water, and Grass types are what you want to bring to this Gym. If you took either Piplup or Turtwig for your starter you’ll do fine. Chimchar can learn a fighting-type move after it evolves at level 14 as well. But you may want to consider bringing along a Psyduck that’s learned Water Pulse if your starter was Chimchar. A Psyduck with Water Pulse will cruise through the Gym.
You can also find the Grass-type Pokemon Budew to the north of Jubilife City, and Machop, a Fighting-type, to the north of Oreburgh City.
Defeat the trainers on the way to Roark, just to make sure your party is fine handling the Rock-types, they also provide some great amounts of EXP for your party.
As long as you have a couple of Pokemon that can deal with the Rock-types, your battle shouldn’t be too tough and you’ll be awarded the Coal Badge for beating Roark.
The Coal Badge
The Coal Badge will allow you to use Rock Smash outside of battle, to break small cracked rocks.
Backtrack to the Oreburgh Gate and you can now use your Rock Smash ability to access the lower levels of the cave. Down here you can find TM70 – Flash, which we will need for the upcoming area, Wayward Cave.
To continue on to our next Badge, the Forest Badge, you’ll need to backtrack to Jubilife City and head north onto Route 204.
The Forest Badge
The next section in our 100% playthrough for Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl is covering up to the second Gym Badge, the Forest Badge.
We’ll be heading through Floaroma Town, Eterna Forest, Eterna City, and onto obtaining the Forest Badge.
