The Master Sword and the Mask Shop – The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

The Master Sword – Zelda Ocarina of Time

The Ocarina of Time

Hyrule Field

Now that we have the three Spiritual Stones as you approach Hyrule Castle Town you’ll notice that the clouds begin to darken and the Drawbridge will be raised, even during the day.

As you approach you’ll trigger a cutscene with Zelda being whisked away on horseback. She’ll throw something into the moat as she goes past.

Following her, you’ll have a quick interaction with Gannondorf before he leaves to follow Zelda.

Once the cutscenes are over, dive into the moat to claim the Ocarina of Time. As you surface, you’ll trigger another short cutscene where Zelda will teach you the Song of Time.

You can now enter the city and proceed to the Temple of Time to continue the main story. Or you can take a quick detour and complete the Happy Mask Shop Questline now as well. Once you claim the Master Sword, you won’t be able to return to complete the Happy Mask Shop Quest until you’ve completed the Forest Temple. So keep that in mind.

Skip Down to the Temple of Time section to continue the walkthrough if you’re not interested in completing the Happy Mask Shop Questline.

The Happy Mask Shop

The Happy Mask Shop – Zelda Ocarina of Time

The Happy Mask Shop Questline

After you’ve grabbed the Ocarina and gone through all the short cutscenes you’ll regain the ability to enter Hyrule Castle Town.

In Hyrule Castle Town, between the exits to Hyrule Castle and the Temple of Time is a small shop called the Happy Mask Shop. Head inside and speak to the owner to begin the Questline.

The whole idea here is to get a Mask from the shop and then find its owner out in the world. People will react to you differently when you’re wearing Masks, and if you speak to the right person while wearing a Mask, they may offer to purchase it from you.

Keaton Mask

The first Mask you’ll be able to grab is the Keaton Mask. Purchase it from the shop owner for 10 Rupees and make sure to equip it to one of your item slots.

This Mask can be given to the Guard in Kakariko Village, in front of the passage to Death Mountain. So head over to Kakariko Village and put the Mask on before you speak to him. He’ll offer to buy it for 15 Rupees so hand it over and then make your way back to the Happy Mask Shop to pick up the next Mask.

Skull Mask

Head back to the Happy Mask Shop and grab the Skull Mask next.

Start to make your way over to the Lost Woods just beyond the Kokiri Forest. Before we hand the Mask over to its new owner, we can go grab an upgrade for our Deku Sticks.

When you first enter the Lost Woods you’ll be faced with three pathways, take the one on the right.

Now take the left path, you should arrive at an area with a boulder in the righthand side corner.

Take the path to the right of the boulder.

You’ll arrive in a section with a pool of water in front of you, take the left path here.

Take a left in this next area as well to arrive at the Meadow area.

Once you’re in this small Meadow, head to the back of the area where you can see some butterflies. Near the butterflies is a hole in the ground, simply run around until Link drops down into the area below.

Once you’re in here, put on the Skull Mask and walk forward to make a few Deku Scrubs appear. They’ll follow you around for a minute before returning to their boss, who will award you with an upgrade for your Deku Stick carrying capacity.

Now that we have that you need to make your way back to the start of the Lost Woods. From the Meadow, head back one area and then take the path straight ahead to teleport back outside the Lost Woods.

Turn around and head back inside then take your first left, into a clearing with the Skull Kid who you got a Heart Piece from previously. **Note you cannot give him the Skull Mask if you haven’t played Saria’s Song and got his Heart Piece yet.** Put on your Skull Mask and speak to him, he’ll offer to purchase the Mask for 10 Rupees.

With that done, head back to the Happy Mask Shop for the next Mask.

Spooky Mask

Grab the Spooky Mask from the Happy Mask Shop and then head over to Kakariko Village’s Graveyard.

During the daytime you’ll find a small child stomping around the middle of the Graveyard, wishing he could be more like Dampe the Gravekeeper.

Put on the Spooky Mask and speak to him again, he’ll happily buy the Mask from you for 30 Rupees.

**While you’re here in the Graveyard, consider planting a Magic Bean in the Soft Soil location here. We’ll be back here later after we draw the Master Sword, and the Magic Bean will allow us to grab some items.**

Head back to the Happy Mask Shop for the next Mask.

Bunny Hood

The next Mask from the Happy Mask Shop is the Bunny Hood.

The Bunny Hood is fairly unique in that its a moving NPC that wants this Mask, and he can be a pain to track down.

Your target is out in Hyrule field doing laps around Lon Lon Ranch, training for a Marathon.

The easiest way to run into him is to do a lap yourself, counter-clockwise, of Lon Lon Ranch. Since he runs clockwise, if you take the opposite route you have a better chance of finding him. You can also head straight out from the Market into Hyrule Field and take the path to the right around Lon Lon Ranch to try and catch him at the start of his journey.

You’ll need to put the Bunny Hood on and speak to him to have him purchase the Mask off of you. You can also play the Sun’s Song to stop him.

He’ll pay you 500 Rupees for the Mask. Return to the Happy Mask Shop to complete the quest and unlock all the available Masks.

Mask of Truth

When you return you’ll now be able to take the Mask of Truth from the Happy Mask Shop, this Mask allows you to speak to those weird Grey Stones you’ll find scattered about the world. They’re called Gossip Stones and usually contain some sort of additional information about a place or character in the game.

The other purpose of the Mask of Truth is to take it back to the Forest Stage we previously visited with the Skull Mask. Head over to the Lost Woods and take the following path: Right, Left, Right, Left, and finally another Left.

In this Meadow area, head toward the butterflies at the back of the area and drop down the hole into the Forest Stage.

Put on the Mask of Truth and interact with the Deku Scrubs, after a minute or so they’ll hand over an upgrade to our Deku Nut carrying capacity.

With the Happy Mask Shop Questline complete, we can now make our way to the Temple of Time.

The Temple of Time

Where we left off, we’ve already acquired the Ocarina of Time from Princess Zelda, as well as the Song of Time. We also currently hold all three of the Spiritual Stones needed to open the Door of Time.

Make your way back to the Hyrule Market Town, and take the exit to the right of the Happy Mask Shop into the Temple of Time.

Approach the large altar at the end of the hallway and examine it, you’ll need to whip out the Ocarina of Time and play the Song of Time. This will open the door and allow you to take the Master Sword. Here you’ll trigger a bunch of cutscenes.

During the cutscenes, you’ll learn the current state of Hyrule, as well as the fact that you’ve now aged seven years, and are effectively adult size now.

When you regain control of Link, try to leave the Temple of Time to be stopped by a new character: Sheik.

Sheik will direct you to head towards Kakariko Village as your first stop, before making your way over to the Forest Temple.

On our way to Kakariko, we’ll have a quick detour to rescue an old friend.

Forest Temple Zelda Ocarina of Time

Forest Temple

Our first stop after the Temple of Time is the Forest Temple. Along the way, we’ll free Epona and claim the Hookshot.

The Forest Temple is a great first Dungeon to tackle as Adult Link. Completing it will award us the Fairy Bow, which along with Epona, opens up a few other things we can do after the Dungeon.
