Overdrive Modes
At the beginning of the game, all characters charge their overdrive gauges by taking damage from enemy attacks (Stoic Overdrive Mode). As certain conditions are met, these settings can be changed later in the game to allow your characters to fill them in various other ways instead.
To access these additional methods you’ll need to enter the limit break menu, press cancel, and then select the option “Set Mode” at the top of the screen, from here you can choose from the various options you’ve unlocked.
Each different overdrive option is unlocked in a different way, some require certain conditions to be filled or an in-game event to occur for example.

Stoic

Warrior

Charge Rate: | (damage inflicted) x 10 / (estimated damage) * 3 [maximum 16] |
How to learn: | Unlock the Warrior Overdrive mode by dealing damage to enemies, does not count overdrive or item damage inflicted by the character. |

Comrade

How to learn: | Unlocks after allies take a certain number of attacks from enemies. |

Healer
Overdrive Mode: | Healer |

Description: | “Charges when character heals allies.” |
Charge Rate: | (healed amount) * 16 / (target’s max HP) |
How to learn: | Unlocks after your character heals allies a certain number of times. Spells that heal multiple allies, like Pray, count per ally healed. |
How many Heal effects required for each character to unlock: | Tidus – 80 Yuna – 60 Wakka – 100 Lulu – 170 Kimahri – 100 Auron – 200 Rikku – 70 |
Tactician

Description: | “Charges when status attack succeeds.” |
Charge Rate: | 16% per status |
How to learn: | Unlocks after your character inflicts a certain number of status effects on enemies. Use weapons with status effects built in like “Poisontouch”. |

Victim

Description: | “Charges when character hit with status attack.” |
Charge Rate: | 16% per status |
How to learn: | Unlocked after each character is inflicted with a certain number of negative status ailments. You can speed up learning this by fighting enemies that inflict multiple status effects each battle, for example Malboro’s. |

Dancer

Avenger

How to learn: | Unlocked for a character after allies have been KO’d a certain number of times. |

Slayer

Hero

Charge Rate: | 20% per enemy defeated – with 10,000 hp or more. |
How to learn: | Unlocked after defeating a certain number of enemies (with hp greater than 10,000) in battle. |

Rook
Overdrive Mode: | Rook |

Description: | “Charges when character magically blocks attacks” |
Charge Rate: | 10% per blocked attack |
How to learn: | Block spells using magic abilities such as; NulBlaze, NulShock, NulTide, NulFrost, and Reflect. Armor with any of these abilities built in will make this much easier to acquire. |

Victor

Sufferer
Overdrive Mode: | Sufferer |

Description: | “Charges while character is suffering from status ailment” |
Charge Rate: | 16% per turn while suffering status ailment. |
How to learn: | Learned from having a character inflicted with a negative status for a turn. Learn it quickly by inflicting negative status on your own party, abilities like Slowga work well, then skip the characters turns. |

Daredevil
Overdrive Mode: | Daredevil |

Description: | “Charges while a character fights with low HP” |
Charge Rate: | 16% per turn with low HP. |
How to learn: | Learned while your character fights below 50% HP. Use the guard ability once a characters HP is low enough for them to accumulate turns safely at low HP. |
How many turns for each character to learn: | Tidus – 170 Yuna – 90 Wakka – 140 Lulu – 150 Kimahri – 200 Auron – 260 Rikku – 110 |
Loner
Overdrive Mode: | Loner |
---|---|
Description: | “Charges while character fights alone” |
Charge Rate: | 16% per turn will alone. |
How to learn: | Fight battles with only one character remaining. Attack your own party members to have them faint until only one remains, skip turns until the overdrive mode is then learned. Safest to complete against low level enemies. |
