Phoenix Guide – Final Fantasy XVI
There are a total of 8 Eikons to unlock in Final Fantasy XVI and Phoenix is the first you will acquire as you progress through the story.
Phoenix is the first aspect of fire, the second being Ifrit, and plays a large part in the main story of FF16. Phoenix’s Dominant is the young Joshua Rosfield who has no love for the Eikon, instead choosing to view it as a burden. As the story progresses, Clive will gain its blessing and be able to wield a portion of Phoenix’s Flames.
Phoenix’s Eikonic Powers are first unlocked at the start of the “Sunrise, Sunset” main story quest. You’ll gain full use of them during the “Lost in the Fog” mission.

Phoenix Eikonic Abilities:
Players can choose 2 of the Eikonic Abilities to equip as well as the Eikons Feat. Even though Phoenix is the first Eikon that becomes available, its abilities and feat remain useful throughout the entire game.
Scarlet Cyclone
Spin quickly, creating a ring of fire that burns all enemies in range.
In-game Description – Final Fantasy XVI
Scarlet Cyclone is usually considered the weakest of Phoenix’s abilities. It allows Clive to spin using the Phoenix’s wings to deal a small amount of fire damage to all enemies around him. While handy for taking out groups of weaker enemies, this ability is quickly outclassed and can even be replaced by Clive’s regular attacks. It deals too small an area and too low an amount of damage to really be useful in one of your slots.
Heatwave
Summon a projectile-dispelling wall of liquid flame before launching several deadly shockwaves. Wave force is amplified upon dispelling magic.
In-game Description – Final Fantasy XVI
Heatwave is very powerful but can be quite difficult to use. It creates a wall of fire to block enemy magic and launch a projectile as retaliation. If used without countering an enemy spell the projectile is quite weak, however, a much stronger projectile is created and launched if Heatwave is used to cancel an enemy spell. Unupgraded it will shoot 1 projectile, or 2 projectiles if used as a counter. Fully upgraded it will fire 2 projectiles, or 4 if used as a counter.
Powerful if you can use it correctly and it gives Clive a magic counter and projectile option in battle.
Rising Flames
Summon a fiery wing that deals damage and can launch lighter enemies into the air.
In-game Description – Final Fantasy XVI
A very powerful attack that will send enemies into the air, setting you up for an aerial combo on them.
Clive uses the wing of the Phoenix in his attack to send an enemy into the air. Very simple and very effective.
Phoenix Eikonic Feat:
Phoenix Shift
Close the distance to an enemy in an instant and perform a fiery slash attack.
Flames of Rebirth
Deal damage in a large radius while healing self.
In-game Description – Final Fantasy XVI
What does Flames of Rebirth do?
The Flames of Rebirth ability allows Clive to perform an attack that damages all enemies in an area while healing himself at the same time. While incredibly useful against large numbers of enemies, or while Clive’s HP is running low, its cooldown time is quite long. An Accessory called the Breath of Fire (Flames of Rebirth) will shorten the cooldown by 12 seconds if equipped.
Unlocking the Flames of Rebirth
The Flames of Rebirth ability becomes available for purchase from the end of the “Sunrise, Sunset” main quest. You’ll find it in the Abilities Tab in the menu.
To acquire the Flames of Rebirth you’ll need to spend 1,695 Ability Points. So consider carefully before picking up the skill. If you do grab it, it can then be assigned through the Gear and Eikons tab in the menu.
How to Upgrade and Master Flames of Rebirth
You can upgrade and master the Flames of Rebirth ability through the Abilities tab in the menu. The first upgrade will cost 2,390 Ability Points and unlocks an additional attack for Clive to use when the ability is activated.
Mastering the Flames of Rebirth will cost 4,250 Ability Points and then allows this ability to be assigned to any Eikon.
