Death Mountain – The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Goron City – Zelda Ocarina of Time

Kakariko Village

Where we last left off, we’d just returned to Kakariko Village to claim the Shard of Agony prize from the House of Skulltula. If you have at least 20 Gold Skulltula tokens you can head there and grab it, otherwise, you’ll still need to head to Kakariko Village for the next story section anyway.

Head to the north section of Kakariko Village to the guard standing in front of the large iron gate. Equip Princess Zelda’s Letter, and show it to the Guard. He’ll open the way forward for you to continue up the mountain.

He’ll remark that you’ll need a better shield to brave the mountain, luckily we already got a free Hylian Shield from the Kakariko Graveyard. If you didn’t you can follow that guide to grab a free one, or buy the one in the Hyrule Castle Town Market. He’ll also mention the first of the Masks from the Happy Mask Shop back in Castle Markets. We’ll cover that Side Quest in a later portion of the story.

Once you’re done chatting to the Guard, head through the now open gate and up into Death Mountain Trail.

Death Mountain Trail

Here on Death Mountain Trail, you’ll run into many Red Spider enemies called Red Tektites, you can simply avoid them by running around them, or you can clear them out as we go.

Make your way up the path until you see a large boulder blocking a cave. Here you can meet your first Goron. He is curled into a ball beside the rock and will stand up if you approach him. He’ll inform you the boulder is blocking the way to the Goron’s main food source.

Turn around and continue up the mountain for now. As you climb you’ll find a flag ahead of you, as you approach a Goron will roll past, take care to let him pass before you try to climb any further.

Continue up the path and you’ll see a large opening ahead of you, leading into Goron City.

Goron City

As you’ll see there are many tiers to the inside of Goron City. To start off with you can head straight down to the bottom and towards the door on the other side.

Stand on the mat just in front of the door and pull out your Ocarina, like many places in the game, the Goron leader is waiting for a messenger from the Princess. Play Zelda’s Lullaby to unlock the door.

When you enter and speak with Darunia the Goron leader, he will be quite down and unhelpful. For this section, we actually need another Ocarina Song, Saria’s Song from the Lost Woods to progress.

There is a shortcut from the Goron City to the Lost Woods if you need to go and get it, simply light a Deku Stick inside Darunia’s Room and then make your way outside, lighting torches as you go. Once all of the torches at the bottom of Goron City are lit, the Giant Pot in the center of the area will begin to spin.

Light another stick and follow the right wall through a passageway and up some stairs, you’ll come to a hallway with Bombflowers and Boulders blocking the path, simply swing your lit Deku Stick at the Bombflowers to clear the passage and open a shortcut to the Lost Woods.

You can head back to our Lost Woods section for a full guide on how to obtain it if you don’t already have it. Head over and speak with Saria in the Sacred Forest Meadow to claim the new Song and then return to Goron City and Darunia’s Room.

Stand in front of Darunia, pull out the Ocarina and play Saria’s Song to cheer him up.

After a quick dance break, he’ll give you the Goron’s Bracelet, which will allow us to pick up and handle Bombflowers now. These Bracelets will help us to open the path into Dodongo’s Cavern, which Darunia mentions was sealed by Gannondorf when he couldn’t obtain the Spiritual Stone of Fire from the Gorons.

If you haven’t already, take a lit Deku Stick and use it to light all of the torches on the bottom level of Goron City to make the Giant Pot in the center start to spin.

Heart Piece #10

Take the stairs from the bottom level of Goron City, up one level, and head to the left (if you are facing the Giant Pot) to find some Bombflowers on the ground, down a short corridor. Grab the Bombflowers run back while holding them and throw them into the now rotating Giant Pot. If you are successful, the Pot will stop spinning on one of its three faces and you’ll get a reward for your effort. Keep trying until you get the Giant Pot to stop on its Happy Face, once this happens it’ll spit out the real reward, Heart Piece #10.

Head back up to the top level of Goron City and back out into the Death Mountain Trail.

Death Mountain Trail

As you leave Goron City, head to the right this time to find a Bombflower and a Goron.

Now that we have the Goron’s Bracelet you can pick the Bombflower and toss it over the edge. Keep doing this until you land it in the right place to destroy the Boulder that was blocking the entrance to Dodongo’s Cavern.

Heart Piece #11

We can also grab a Heart Piece while we’re here as well. You’ll need to turn Link so that his back is towards the right hand side corner of the small fenced section containing the Bombflower that you just used to destroy the Boulder blocking Dodongo’s Cavern. Once your aim is right, you want to hold down the “Z Targetting” Button and perform a backward somersault over this back corner of the fence.

If done correctly you’ll land on the shelf of land above Dodongo’s Cavern and be able to grab Heart Piece #11. You’re actually supposed to plant a Magic Bean at the entrance to Dodongo’s Cavern and then use the Plant later in the game to access this Heart Piece, but since we can get it now, there’s no reason to wait.

Gold Skulltula #21

Make your way back down to the now open entrance to Dodongo’s Cavern. Here just in front of it, you’ll find another patch of Soft Soil as well, drop some Bugs out of a bottle into the Soft Soil to reveal Gold Skulltula #21.

Grab the Skulltula and then head into Dodongo’s Cavern.

Dodongo’s Cavern

Dodongo’s Cavern – Zelda Ocarina of Time

Main Room

As you enter Dodongo’s Cavern you’ll find the way ahead is blocked. Along the sides of this first room, you’ll find some Bombflowers, use one to destroy the cracked wall section to reveal the rest of Dodongo’s Cavern.

In this main area of the cavern you’ll start to encounter some new enemies, on the middle of the center platform you’ll find a Beamos enemy. This statue will chase Link with a Beam that it shoots out of its “Eye”. You can destroy it by tossing Bombflowers at it, or just simply run past and ignore it for now. **Make sure to equip the Hylian Shield for this whole Dungeon, as your Deku Sheild will burn up if touched by a fire-based enemy.**

Jump to the middle platform with the Beamos and then jump over to the left side of the area.

Use the Bombflower here to destroy the nearby section of Cracked Wall, behind it you’ll find a chest containing the Dungeon Map. Further down, you’ll find another section of Cracked Wall that has a vendor behind it selling replacement Deku Shields.

Jump back onto the middle platform with the Beamos and this time cross to the right side of the room.

Here on this side of the room, you’ll need to use the Bombflower to kill the Beamos that is blocking the way forward. Simply target it, and throw the bomb at its head. With the Beamos gone, run back and pick another Bombflower, run past where the Beamos was and bomb the Cracked Wall to reveal a doorway. Head through into the next area.

Baby Dodongo Hallway

In this new room, you’ll trigger small green burrowing monsters to spawn as you walk through. They are easy enough to defeat with your sword, but be aware that they will detonate after they’re defeated, causing damage to Link.

About halfway down the hallway, you’ll find a Cracked Wall that we’ll be back later to bomb. You can get behind it early if you lure a Baby Dodongo over to it before killing it, this reveals the path to a Gold Skulltula. We’ll be back here once we have Bombs to collect this though so for now, just continue down the path.

Climb the ledge at the end of the hallway and up toward the barred door. To unlock this door you’ll need to push or pull one of the Armos statues onto the nearby Switch. This will hold the door open for you.

Head through the door and kill the two Keese in this next small corridor before you head through the next door into the room with the two Lizalfos.

Lizalfos Lava Room Lower Floor

Upon entering, the door will seal behind you and two new enemies will drop down onto the platforms in front of you, these are Lizalfos.

As soon as you use your “Z Target” lockon, on one of the enemies the other will back off. Defend its attacks with your shield, there’s no Fire Keese in here, so it’s safe to re-equip the Deku Shield for the fight. After blocking an attack, take the opportunity to strike it back. Trade blows until the two Lizalfos swap places.

Keep up the pattern of defending and striking back, eventually, they will both fall and the doors will unlock.

Adult Dodongo Room

**Switch back to the Hylian Shield now.** The next room houses the adult version of the Dodongo enemies we faced earlier. These don’t burrow like the babies and are now only weak on their tails. Let them target you and breathe their fire, while you run around behind them and hit the tail. Do this enough and you’ll defeat these enemies. They’re also weak to Slingshot attacks.

There are three of these Adult Dodongo’s in here, defeat them and then light your Deku Stick on the only lit torch in the room.

Run around and light the three unlit torches to unlock the door to the next room.

Main Room

We exit the Adult Dodongo room and return to one of the higher ledges back in the Main Room of Dodongo’s Cavern. Hit the Switch in front of you to unlock a door on the opposite side of the room.

Cross over and enter through the now unlocked door to continue.

Bombflower Room

Don’t worry too much about what to do here in this room yet. Instead, grab one of the Bombflowers and bomb the Cracked Wall on the left hand side of the room. Head through the new passage into the next room.

Compass Room

Here you’ll need to defeat an enemy to claim the Dungeon’s Compass in the chest. This enemy is called an Armos and it looks like one of the many statues you’ve seen up till now. You can defeat the enemy with the nearby Bombflowers by tossing one at them and having the Armos caught in the explosion. Or by stunning it with a Deku Nut and using a jump attack to finish it off.

Whichever you choose, it will start to jump and spin wildly around the room before exploding. Make sure to keep your distance.

Claim the Compass from the Chest and then head back to the Bombflower Room.

Bombflower Room

As you enter from this direction, you should see there is a gap in the row of Bombflowers that surround the central pillar in the room. Collect a spare Bombflower from near the door you just came through and place it in the gap between the Bombflowers around the pillar.

After the Pillar falls, you’ll now have access to the upper levels of this area.

Gold Skulltula #22

Climb the large stairs and follow the path to either the left or right until you come to a set of vines. Use your Slingshot to defeat the enemies on the Vine and also to defeat Gold Skulltula #22. Climb the vine to collect the token.

Head through the door on this upper level to progress.

Armos Puzzle Room

Here in this room are more of the Armos Statues, and some Fire Keese. Take out the Fire Keese with your Slingshot.

On the central platform in this room is a switch we need to activate. Find the ladder leading up to it and push the Armos Statue out of the way. Climb up and press the switch to open the way forward. Be careful as the Armos Statue blocking the Ladder is the only one that can be safely touched. The others will spring to life and attack.

Jump off the platform and head through the next door.

Main Room – Upper Level

Head across the bridge here, making your way to the door on the opposite side. Take care that the two Fire Keese that are flying about don’t knock you off. Once you reach the other side, head through the door and through the small corridor on the other side to arrive in the next room.

Blade Trap Room – Lower Level

When you first enter this room, Navi will prompt you to use your targeting to look around corners. There are a bunch of sliding blade traps in this room that will make moving around a little difficult. Try to avoid them as best you can while you make your way to the other side of the area.

On the other side you’ll find a movable block, bombable wall, and a Bombflower on a nearby platform. On the platform with the Bombflower is a small chest containing some Rupees as well. You want to climb up to where the Bombflower is and use it to blowup the cracked wall at the top of the ladder. You can toss Bombflowers until one lands on the ledge, or you can hold the Bombflower till it is flashing red and throw it to have it explode in midair. The third option is if you left the movable block near the wall you can simply hold the Bombflower above your head and jump over onto the block and let it explode.

Either way, once the wall is gone, jump over and head through the door to the next area.

Eye Puzzle Room #1

In the next room, your way forward is blocked by fire. Take out your Slingshot and shoot the Eye Switch above the flames to have it die down and allow you to cross to the other side. The next hallway will spawn Baby Dodongo’s as you attempt to cross, just ignore them and make your way to the door to the next room.

Lizalfos Lava Room Upper Floor

As soon as you enter, the door behind you will lock and you’ll be thrown into battle with two more of the Lizalfos enemies. They will attack you one at a time, so take your time and defeat them to unlock the doors. Head through the next door to the next area.

Eye Puzzle Room #2

You’ll find another series of platforms to cross here and to remove the flames you’ll need to hit two eye switches this time. The first switch is directly ahead, hit it with your Slingshot, and then jump to the next platform. For the second flame barrier, you’ll need to turn to the left to find another eye switch that will lower the second flame barrier. Hit the switch and jump across the platforms. Head through the door to the next room.

Blade Trap Room – Upper Level

You’ll pop out on the upper level of the room we were in previously with the moving Blade Traps on the floor. Continue along the path and climb up the ledge on the righthand side. Here you’ll find a chest containing Bombs. Continue through into the next area.

Main Room – Upper Level

We’ll now arrive back in the main area of Dodongo’s Cavern, this time we’re close to the Giant Dodongo Skull at the far end of the room. Hit the switch directly in front of you to create a shortcut between this upper level and the lower level.

Head over the large bridge until you come to the two gaps in it. You need to drop bombs down these gaps in order to light up the eyes of the Giant Dodongo Skull. Doing this will open its mouth, revealing the way to the Boss of the Dungeon. Take the elevator back down to the Lower Level and we’ll grab another Gold Skulltula before we head through the new doorway.

Gold Skulltula #23

We need to head back to the first area with Baby Dodongo’s that we encountered. From the entrance of the Dungeon, make your way to the southeast doorway to enter the corridor that spawns the Baby Dodongo’s. Follow the path until you reach the ledge to go up towards the door, instead of climbing the ledge, you can find a cracked wall nearby, drop one of your new Bombs to blow it open, and reveal a path to a new room.

Inside the room, you’ll find Gold Skulltula #23 against the back wall. Use your Jump Attack to claim the token if you’re having trouble reaching it.

From here head back to the Main Room of Dodongo’s Cavern and up through the doorway that we revealed inside the Giant Dodongo Skull.

Final Room

In this first room, just head straight for the exit to the right. Follow the long corridor to the next area.

Climbing Wall Room

As soon as you enter, hunt down the two Fire Keese in the room, they will knock you off of the path while you’re trying to climb.

Gold Skulltula #24

In this room, make your way straight towards the back and you’ll find a small ledge with a bombable wall above it. You can pull out a Bomb and simply stand by the wall, holding the Bomb, until it detonates to destroy the wall and open the path forward.

Head through the door and use your Bombs to destroy the Armos Statue in here, and then collect the Gold Skulltula #24 on the back wall. If you have trouble reaching it, use a Jump Attack. From here head back into the previous room.

Climbing Wall Room

Defeat the Fire Keese once again, climb up the nearby blocks so that you can climb on top of the high walls in this room.

Once you’re on top of the high walls, you can jump over into the area on the northwest to continue on. Head through the door and down the next long corridor.

Final Room

When you enter from this side you’ll find a stone block you can push. Push it straight off the ledge and then into the gap in the center of the area, this will allow you to enter the door to the Boss Room.

Boss Room

Enter the room and open the chest to refill your Bombs, use a Bomb on the small section of cracked-looking flooring to open a path straight down to the Boss of the Dungeon.

Boss Battle: King Dodongo – Infernal Dinosaur

King Dodongo has two ways of dealing damage to you in this battle. He breathes fire, and rolls around the arena, both of these can be dodged by moving close to the lava in the center of the arena. You can also avoid damage from his rolling attack by simply holding down your shield button.

The way to defeat him is to wait for him to begin inhaling to charge his fire breath, run up and throw a bomb into his mouth while it is open to stun him. He’ll drop to the ground and you’ll be able to run over and hit him a couple of times. After a couple of hits, he’ll get up and roll away. Chase him down and repeat the process until he’s defeated.

After the battle, he’ll roll into the Lava and fade away. Leaving behind a Heart Container and a Blue Portal. Grab the Heart Container to increase your max HP and then enter the Portal to be transported outside Dodongo’s Cavern.

Death Mountain Trail

Death Mountain Trail – Zelda Ocarina of Time

Outside the Dungeon, you’ll run into Darunia and some other Gorons. They’ll hand over the Gorons Ruby, our next spiritual stone. He’ll also leave us with some parting words about visiting the Great Fairy who lives at the top of Death Mountain.

Gold Skulltula #25

The first thing we need to do is grab another Gold Skulltula, head back down towards Kakariko Village and along the way, you’ll pass a section of cracked wall, about halfway between Kakariko and Dodongo’s Cavern. Use your new Bombs to blow it open to reveal Gold Skulltula #25. You can climb up the back wall to reach the Token.

After you’ve gotten the Gold Skulltula, make your way back up Death Mountain and back into Goron City for another Gold Skulltula.

Goron City

Once you enter Goron City, you’ll notice on the next level down, that there is a large rolling Goron doing a circuit of the floor. Jump down and wait for him to roll under the enclosed northern section of the city, while he is there, throw Bombs at him. If you hit him with an explosion he will stop and allow you to talk to him. Stopping him in this northern section will make him give you our first Bomb Bag upgrade. Now you can hold 40 Bombs.

Gold Skulltula #26

On the west side of Goron City, on the highest level, you can find a number of boulders blocking the path. Use your Bombs to blow them up to be able to continue forward into another room, filled with more boulders. In here, use your Bombs to blast a path through the destructible Boulders until you reach the chest at the back end of the room. You’ll also find a crate at the back, near the chest, roll into it to reveal Gold Skulltula #26. The chests here both contain Purple Rupees.

With all of that out of the way, it is now safe to leave Goron City and head back out to the Death Mountain Trail.

Death Mountain Trail

Our goal now is to follow Darunia’s advice and find the Great Fairy at the top of Death Mountain.

Make your way back down the trail toward where Dodongo’s Cavern is located. Along the way, you’ll pass a section of the mountain that was locked to us before now, as it is blocked with boulders. Use your new Bombs to destroy the boulders and open the path to continue to the top of the mountain.

After the section with the three boulders, you’ll climb up to what looks like a long narrow section of the mountain, as you approach the Volcano will begin to erupt, shooting boulders and flaming debris in Link’s direction. Try to avoid as many of the pieces as you can and make for the opposite end of the path, once you reach the other end the eruption will stop.

You’ll find a large section of climbable wall here, but before heading up, take out your Slingshot and remove the Skullwalltula’s. There are three in total. Make your way to the top of the mountain and you’ll find the Owl up here along with an opening on the right. Dodge the Owl for now and take the right passage into the Death Mountain Crater.

Death Mountain Crater

Inside the Death Mountain Crater, you can only spend a limited amount of time before Link is overcome by the heat.

Gold Skulltula #27

The first thing you’ll want to do is roll into the Crate near the entrance, this will reveal Gold Skulltula #27.

Heart Piece #12

Exit and re-enter the Crater to reset your timer if you need, now move straight ahead until you are at the edge of the ledge here in Crater, overlooking the lava below.

Move to the right until you are opposite the platform down below that you can see with a Triforce emblem on it. Now from here, you want to approach the edge of the ledge and Link will drop over and grab the edge. This whole face of the cliff is climbable so start making your way down toward the Lava.

If your positioned correctly a hole in the wall will be directly below you which Link can drop down into to claim a Heart Piece (#12). To return to the entrance, just jump into the Lava below.

Once back at the entrance, leave the Crater back out onto the Death Mountain Trail.

Death Mountain Trail

Avoid the Owl and on the opposite side of the area up here, you’ll find a section of cracked wall that you can Bomb to open a new passage, this one into a Great Fairy Fountain.

Inside the Great Fairy Fountain approach the alter and play Zelda’s Lullaby to summon the Fairy who will grant us the use of Magic, and power up Links Spin Attack.

Head back outside and this time interact with the Owl, after the chat move close to his talons to get a ride down to Kakariko Village.

Kakariko Village

Heart Piece #13

The Owl will drop you off on top of a building in Kakariko Village, DO NOT jump off yet!

Move close to the edge of the roof, closest to where the Cuckoo Pen is below it. Just below where you are, but above the Cuckoo Pen is an outcropping from the building below that you can now drop down onto since you’re on the roof above it. Move Link to the ledge and carefully drop down to land on the ledge below.

Once on the Ledge, you’ll find a doorway you can enter to go inside the house and claim our next Heart Piece (#13). If you accidentally fell off, you can play the Sun’s Song to return to where the Owl dropped you off, as long as you don’t leave the Village or enter another house.

That’s all we need to do in Kakariko Village for now. Make your way back to the Hyrule Castle Town Market to find a new Shop has opened up and holds a new mini-game for us to complete.

Bombchu Bowling Alley

Bombchu Bowling Alley – Zelda Ocarina of Time

In the Hyrule Castle Town Market, you’ll find the Bombchu Bowling Alley on the same side as the Shooting Gallery, between the exits to Hyrule Field, and Hyrule Castle.

Inside the Bowling Alley, speak to the woman at the counter to be shown the current prize, and to start the game. You’ll need to use the Bombchu’s that she gives you, and get them to hit the target she puts on the walls. You’ll be required to hit three targets with each getting progressively more and more obstacles between yourself and the target.

See the video above for a demonstration, but the first portion is always fairly easy, just line up the target and fire away. Once the chickens are in it though, it becomes trickier. You’ll need to make sure your aim is fine first, then wait for the 1st chicken to be well away from you before firing. The large chicken though you want to fire just before it starts to move out of the way, and pray it doesn’t double back.

Heart Piece #14

The prizes for the Bombchu Bowling Alley rotate through a cycle so you’ll eventually be able to claim all of the ones you want. The order is: Bombchu’s, Heart Piece (#14), Bombs, Bomb Bag, and a Purple Rupee. You’ll want to try to obtain at least the Heart Piece (#14) and Bomb Bag Upgrade, Bombchu’s are entirely optional and only make one puzzle (in the Spirit Temple) easier later on.

If you run out of Rupees to continue with the mini-game, just visit the nearby Guardhouse at the Drawbridge to farm up some more.

Hyrule Castle

Once you’re done at the Bombchu Alley, make your way to Hyrule Castle.

Climb the vines and head over the locked gate, but instead of taking the left path between the guards to reach the Castle, continue following the path straight to a dead-end with a boulder. Use one of your Bombs to destroy the boulder and reveal a small passage you can take to continue.

Head through the small hole into a new Great Fairy Fountain. Play Zelda’s Lullaby again at the Triforce emblem to summon the Great Fairy and receive our first spell: Din’s Fire. *You cannot obtain this if you never visited the Great Fairy at the top of Death Mountain.

Next up we need to head back into Hyrule Field.

Heart Piece #15

Make your way out of the Castle area and back out into Hyrule Field. You need to make your way to the small fenced square section just outside the entrance to Lake Hylia.

Here in the middle of this square fenced section, if you have the Stone of Agony, you’ll hear it chiming to indicate a “secret” is nearby. Drop a Bomb in the center of the square area to reveal a hole in the ground. Jump in and you’ll find a Business Scrub, willing to sell you a Heart Piece (#15) for 10 Rupees.

There is one more upgrade we can reach with our Bombs as well. Make your way to the Kokiri Forest and into the Lost Woods. From here follow the path (Right, Left, Right, Left, Forward, Left, Right) to the final area just before you enter the Sacred Meadow to find a boulder (the area you take the final Left into). Blow it up with some Bombs and jump into the hole to find another Business Scrub, this one will sell you a Deku Nut Upgrade for 40 Rupees.

Follow the below link to the next section of the Walkthrough.

Zora's Domain - The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Zora’s Domain

From Death Mountain, we make our way to Zora’s River and eventually into Zora’s Domain. Here we find the last of the three Spiritual Stone Dungeons: Inside Jabu-Jabu’s Belly.
