Welcome to our guide for Nier Automata. We’re going to be looking at the tutorial in this first write up, if you can survive and make it to the end then you’ll be well equipped for the rest of the game.
Tutorial Opening Mission
The opening for the tutorial is very straight forward. The first 5mins or so will be a bullet-hell type air battle in 2B’s flight suit. Afterward, we get our first introduction to the main character: 2B.
Complete the battles and watch the cutscenes to eventually be met by our first real test. An encounter with a Buzzsaw enemy.
Liberal use of pod fire, as well as attacking whenever it pauses after its own attack should see you bringing its health down quickly. About halfway through the fight, you’ll be granted a laser pod program that you can use to help you finish it off quickly. Once beaten we’ll get another cutscene and meet the other lead character; 9S.
The map path going forward is fairly linear, just be sure to check around for any chests or extra items, if you get lost at any point the video at the top of the page covers this entire section for you. At this point in the game healing items are very useful. Be sure to take some time to practice your dodging and get a good handle on the controls in general. You can’t save the game until the conclusion of the tutorial so if you die, its game over and you’ll need to restart this whole section.
When your ready for it the tutorial boss is located at the end of the long bridge you’ll eventually come to. Remember to be careful and heal often as death right now means having to re-do this entire section.
Tutorial Boss Battle:
Use chip damage from your pod fire and pod laser programs as much as possible, stay safe and try to time your dodges to avoid the big sweeping attacks that the boss will make. Eventually the boss will reveal its next form and the fight will change alittle.
Continue to use your pod fire and laser programs liberally, eventually you’ll trigger 9S to come and assist in the fight. At this point the boss will also change its attack behaviour, ducking below the bridge and exploding upwards. The best way to avoid this attack is to run towards the camera, the boss will destroy the section of bridge you were on but you should remain safe out of his reach and ready to start firing and evading again.
Continue the fight and eventually, 9S will save you at the expense of his flight suit. You’ll need to scale the boss and save him from any further harm.
Now that we have access to a flight suit the fight continues. Keep up and eventually, the boss will fall and you’ll be rewarded with some sad cutscenes.
When we wake up we’re in space, aboard the “Bunker”. Meet up with 9S to continue the story.
